For those of you that have built racks using rubbermaid bins...do you still use hides in your racks? Or do you let the darkness of the back act as a hide?
Salar you do not need hide box with your ball's since they are in rack's.However if you have a gravid female then it is good for them to lay in a hide box to dump the eggs.

Depends on the snake/age/size/individual.
I still use hides in most of them.

Instead of two hides, I put one over the heat source area. My rubbermaids are also these black opaque ones that I got from canadian tire, so it probably makes them feel even more secure.
I usually use only one where the heat source is in the rubbermaids.
I TRY to use the one all the time but the young ones especially always push it around or knock it upside down, and seem content to sit in the open. :)
I like to offer them the security though, even in a rack.

Some need hides, some don't. Depends on the snake. I run about 50/50.

I had hides for the smaller ones and they used them all the time, but only the warm side. I had some cruddy ones for the big girls and they seemed to like pushing them off to the side or hiding on top or behind them. I just made some decent ones out of small cat litter pans and all 3 big girls went in as soon as I put them in, so I guess they like them ;)

I always use hides in my rubbermaids. Gives the snake a choice if it wants even more security, snakes like to cram themselves into confined spaces and seem to appreciate being able to feel the sides of the hide box. Its like being in a burrow or a crevice. For small snakes and juveniles I give them a paper towel roll folded over at one end, they really seem to appreciate that. Its always important to give female snakes a hide box with nesting material. If they are gravid and don't have one ,they may retain their eggs and become eggbound. It also doubles as a humidity box. Hope this helps ,Grant A.
I'm a big fan of folding/positioning/crumpling newspaper to act as a hide. I find most of my snakes would rather hide in paper than in a hide anyways, as it acts more like leaf litter.
