View Full Version : You guys have any like this?
I have on young female california kingsnake that is so aggresive at feeding time, half the time she ends up not even eating because she has throw herself into such a temper tantrum than she is too busy striking and tail rattling to eat. She basically eats half as much as the others. No problem growing though.
The rest of the time when she eats, she will strike at the side of the enclosure even when the mouse is half way down her mouth. LOL!
Can't beat Kingsnakes. :D

Got to love cal kings!! Our albino male was like that - would launch himself across the cage, grab the mouse, wrap it in double layers, squeeze the daylights out of it, but if there was any movement by the front of his tank, he would hurl himself at that - trying to get another one and completely forget the one he was constricting. Sometimes he would remember and go back to eat, but lots of the time he just abandoned it, searching for a new, better, bigger one!
These guys are crazy when it comes to food. But our big female just slurps them down - doesn't even bother to constrict most of the time.
The albino above was even worse when it came to breeding - he got himself so worked up and hypercoiled - literally tying himself in knots. We had to move him out of the room to try and get him away from the scent of females and even then the kinks he developed in his spine as a result of his frantic efforts never did resolve.
Some of them certainly are entertaining.

Yeah it's really just bizarre that they can survive in the wild at all with tendencies for frenzies like they have!
What I do now is try to keep her cage 100% covered during feeding and for a day after, I can't even get food into her otherwise!
Funny enough, she is alright for handling, musks once in awhile but otherwise hasn't bitten anyone. :P What dorks they are.

I think our poor cal kings are just too inbred, which is why they are so ditzy.

Marisa, even if you leave it over night??? For the super spazzy ones, I don't even tease-feed. I feed at around 5pm, when its still light out. That way, the snake is usually hiding. I just drop the rodent at the cool end, no muss, no fuss, no spazzing, and no striking.
Gone by morning. Works very well for the hyper ones.
mine have always been insane feeders but never really to that extent. now that theyre bigger they seem to have settled down alittle bit. i just got them both on rats and theyre loving it.

I always hear about snakes calming with age, this guy has been exactly the opposite. As a baby he was no different than a typical corn, as he's aged and grown he's developed a truly violent feeding response and is now very untrustworthy.

He'll let me pick him up without any resistance but eventually he'll decide my hand is food, he's fooled me more than once into thinking he was going to be mellow for me. It's just a good thing kings don't get big enough to do any damage. lol!
Jeff- All I ever do is "leave it overnight"
The simple lifting of the cage throws her into a tantrum. If it's for handling, she then calms a bit as we take her out. But if I simply place a rodent in the opposite end, as soon as she gets the scent she goes Nuts! Half the time she goes TOO nuts and refuses to eat, or simply cannot calm down enough to investigate the rodent. The other half of the time she nails the rodent and constricts it for an hour while striking, then eats! LOL
They are NUTS.
