View Full Version : Mercury Vapor Bulb
I would really like to get this type of lighting for my panther, but I can't find a bulb anywhere. I've tried calling all the pet stores I can think of. If anyone knows where I might buy one in the area, let me know. I knew I should have stopped by Port credit while I was at the show.. Doh!
Thanks, Thrush aka Colleen

Any pet-store should be able to order one in for you, if they don't have it in stock.

Look for Ripti sun, Powersun something like that those are the bulbs u are talking about, they get quite hot when u do get one make sure u have enough room overhead to create proper temps. Only problem i had was short ceiling in a basment and they seemed to have issues with the bulp sticking onto the mount. but that was two years or more ago now since i have had one so im sure they have improved, My chams that did get it never looked better.

yes, you would think that pet stores could order them, but all I've gotten are confused responses, and no.
Yes, the powersun mercury vapour bulb is the one I'm looking for.

Try an online search for them. I cant remember the brand, but I ordered some awhile ago, for fairly cheap. The cheapest ones I found in petstores were almost 100 bucks. I got some shipped from the states for 35 each canadian.

The powersun's were at the last PCPC show..... contact me for vendor... The local petshop asks $80 for the 100 watt bulb, I have two of the bulbs, and so far so good. It would be difficult to "go back" to the fleuro style of lighting... the colors under the PowerSun are amazing!:D

So with these power sun bulbs I'm just wondering how people are setting these up, what kind of placement do you use with them? Do you put them more in the corner of the cage so that would be the basking area? or do you still use a separate bulb/lamp for basking?
If you do place it in the corner of the cage is there enough uv light going to the rest of the cage?

The PowerSun is your UV and heat source in one... so, yes, they do go "over" the basking area. It is essential that the light socket is ceramic... the plastic one's will be history in minutes. I controll the temp by raising or lowering the "woodpile" or basking stones located beneath the light... obviously, the closer the basking pile, the higher the temp. The light needs to be on a timer, no on and off for this bulb....much like photography lights... a single knock can render it history. Having said that...i knocked mine several times, and been lucky!:D I plan to move my beardie shortly to larger accomodations... and will use my "old" uv reptisun 5.0 for the remainder of the cage lighting... good way to use up the last of it, and still provide more light. I find the beardie seldom moves from her favorite perch under the light... despite "by the book" temperatures (ain't it the truth?):sun:
