Makes me wonder how many other giant pythons suffer the same fate in the hands of irresponsible owners. :(

Now you know what can happen to you irresponsible owners, though there are no irresponisble owners here :)

During the trial it emerged that the giant wrestler actually had a phobia of snakes.

I find this quote hard to believe.

Bye bye respect for Jake the Snake.

RIP Damien. :(

Dude, you need to see "Beyond The Mat". It'll make you wonder how he kept your respect THIS long. That guy had a ROUGH life to say the least... sounds like his snake did too. :(

The guy lived in the edge, That's for sure. Heck, half the world lives in the edge, they just don't get the publicity...
I'll give him a break, folks. After all, a month between meals for a snake is nothing. Those judges know **** about reptiles.
Makes me mad, we have people killing people, brutality and violence out in the streets. We have all that and these guys have nothing better to do than give Jake a hard time about his pet snake. I'm sure they all had a big round of donuts after the trial and went home. The world is now a safer place...

"It was severely underweight and had mites and a serious mouth infection, which led to its death from pneumonia three weeks later, after it had been taken in by a specialist vet."

It doesn't sound like he deserves a break to me. As much as I love the nostalgic thoughts of old Jake The Snake, the guy's a bum. Why even keep the snake if he actually IS phobic of them? And more so, why keep it so poorly?

I might give the guy a Kit-Kat but I won't give him a break.

hehe, the kit kat humor was not bad.

Well, i don't know, i think you could be right. But remember that snakes can become problem feeders and get very underweight despite what the owner does (some of mine have and i know it was not my fault). As for mites and mouth infection, those are very common problems that can happen to snakes at any given time, how did they prove Jake inflicted all that on the snake? I try my best at snake keeping, but i also have had my lost battles, i just didn't know it was a crime.

Vet Ron Rees Davies gave evidence that the reptile would have lived if it had received specialist care earlier

That kinda sums up for me that the problems were on going and had something actually been done the snake would have lived.

One side note though, it's good to se the courts getting involved in the negelect of reptiles.

It's to bad that burm died, but are we all really all that surprised ? I mean how much care can a man or woman give to a large or even small reptile when they are known heavy drug users and alchoolics? Something should have been done years ago. I'm also willing to bet that fear of snakes is more a defence ploy to make the judge somewhat more sympethetic to ol' jake.
Anyway I'm sure that Jakes actions and conviction will give all those screaming ban reptiles even more amunition.

Stop the train , there!! Are you saying that sick (yes, sick) people that happen to have problems with drugs or alchool are to be labeled as scum? Do they lose such simple rights as to keep pets?

Yea I gotta agree with JimmyDavid,

Just because a person has a problem.... doesnt mean they are scum...

I know TONS of people using drugs, most have pets. NONE of these pets are under fed or neglected. If anything people with drugs can be very good with pets seeing as a pet will not turn its back on you, just because you use drugs. I am not saying that all drug users are good people to have pets, but i have seen many who are. Being an alcoholic or drug addict is one problem. Being an animal abuser is another problem. They do not always go hand in hand.

I dont see where anyone said people with drug problems are scum. The scum comment was about the fact that the snake would have lived had it received attention earlier. In other words people who neglect their sick pets are scum.

People who use drugs are probably no less likely to be responsible pet owners than those who dont. People who abuse drugs on the other hand are clearly out of control in at least one aspect of their lives. People with drug problems are IMO less able to be responsible for the welfare of other living things. People with problems are not scum, and are worthy of respect as human beings, but I dont think it's wrong to question their ability to be responsible for other living things.

Whoever did that to the snake, be it a wrestler, drug addict, or normal person is scum in my opinion.

Mouht infection, on top of mites, on top of low weight, ON TOP OF tiny enclosure is not something that just happens. Especially NOT all those things at once.

This is a clear case of animal abuse. I am glad someone went ahead and held him accountable. It takes one day to get to the vet, one day to get a larger enclosure, etc. He could have done those things at any time, but obviously had no plans to do so.
