retic caging?

i dont own any retics yet but i hope to aquire some in the next couple of years. i was wondering wat you keep your retics in and is it ok to let a large snake free in a room or is this not a good idea?

ive read in the barrons book that that is prob the best way... either cement floor or vinal. with a running water bath tub. and floor drain.... a few hide boxes... maybe a basking ledge or two... and some lamps

I have never owned large snakes. Ever.

So out of curiosity, wouldn't housing a large retic in a bedroom be inviting problems? I mean you could never be sure of the animals temperment or attitude on any given day when walking into this room. So you could be opening yourself up to accidents.

I would think the only safe way to allow free roam of a room would be a viewing window into the room, or a double door system with one door letting you into a small area, then another door to access the actual cage.

Again, I have never owned these animals but definitly curious about what people do when they are very large.

I know where I work they house a 20 foot retic in 2 tanks which are connected. I think the main part is something like 7 or 8 by 4x4? Its VERY big, and the second part is just a bit smaller. These things need tons of space.

the best floor plan is to have a room where you can open into one area and them move forth by gate into the main room if you really need to have a room dedicated to the animal

Seriously the best way to keep them is by having them in a huge encloser keeping the animal from creating risks top other people animals and its self.

Problems I can see with letting them free-roam in a bedroom:

1) Need to make it escape proof. ie check vents etc

2) Need a LARGE water source, and means of cleaning it regularily

3) Need to make the room humidity resistant so you dont have mold growing all over the place.

4) Need a way to know where the snake is before opening the door. viewing window or video/web cam.

5) Entrance needs to be securely locked to prevent people from unintentionally entering.

6) Need to figure out a way to provide the appropriate heat, gradient, and humidity without putting anything dangerously hot in the room.

7) Need cleanable surfaces to get rid of pee and poo. Tile or concrete is great. wood or carpet, not so much.

ya i guess those would be some problems but think it would be such a pain to have a huge cage and it would also be very expensive. im still researching though

I love retics to but , no matter how you do it is is going to be expensive. The room would need alot of adjustments too fit the snakes needs . I think a very larg cage would work best and would fit the animals needs much better . The room would require a safe sorce of heating and a way to have humididty without creating mold . If you do decide to use the room , building a two door system would be best . Once again anyway you do it , it will cost you alot , If I were you I would build my own enclosure , but then again I don't know your carpentry skills . Good luck and I am sure which ever descision you make will work out great .
