i need to know antything you can tell me... size, better sex to have, what age i should obtain it at, cage size and decription of furnature, substrate, heating, lighting. should a small heat pad be placed under the house or the opposit side or should they have a choice. one house on heat pad and one not... even down to how big of a water dish... every suggestion, warning whatever you wanna tell me... i am reasearching but first hand info is better...
i like natural looking and feeling habitates so the snake is happy and healthy...
i know its asking alot but i really wanna be sure of something before i jump into it... i like thinking i have everything that is wanted and needed and can just basically take a animal from a good habitat and put them into an awsome one.. thanks in advance

You're right it is. Basically you're asking us to write a caresheet for you. You would be better served to search the web for caresheets and then ask specifi questions about what you don't understand.
I will tell you this much. I have two, male and female and so far I think they are great. The female is a picky eater though. She only takes live and only about every two weeks.

Trevor

i have been on the net searching for a few hours now... actually i started last night.... i should have made myself more clear... i dont need one person to answer all questions...just one or two... a way things work through your own experence... like if you find the pad is better under the house than that what i need to know..... for a python that seems to be easily cared for and wide spread there is very little info on them... the best info so far is pretty general... things like there smaller than an average snake. how big is an average snake... or moderate humidity.... but moderate in my eyes may be less or more than yours... thats why i aksed here..
now what might be a littly easier and better mor me is do you have any pics of your tank... and if you heve a bed heater where is it.. this answers most of my questions... i just need some comparisons...
and thank you for the info on the feeding... which one do you find to be more friendly just generally the better sex in your eyes... and our yours housed together, ive read on some sites that this is ok and others that they can be canibleistic .

Peter, all of these answers can be found in any caresheet. Do a search on google for "Childrens Python Caresheets", and you'll find a wealth of information. There is also a search feature on ssnakess.com. Do a search for 'childrens pythons'.
In my experience spotted pythons are similar to childrens pythons, so it can't hurt to read up on them either.
Seeing as you're new to snakes as pets, you should check out the reptile show in Mississauga this Sunday (Nov. 21). There will probably be books for sale (Scotty Allen should have his usual large selection, as will a few other vendors) on childrens pythons and other snakes. You will also have the opportunity to speak to breeders and snake owners alike and it will be an overall beneficial experience for you :) Plus there's always a ton of members there to meet and greet.
Good luck on your first snake!

ill do that... ill be the pierced lip dread head... lol... by the way maybe you can answer this for me... what does the deimal or ratio mean when it comes to snakes... for ex... "The Green Tree Pythons are represented by 2.1 captive bred and born tree pythons which are claimed Sorong locality."

Males.Females.Unsexed/Babies...
So, 1.2.3 cornsnakes would be, one male, two females and 3 hatchling corns...
2.1 Green Tree Pythons = 2 males, 1 female :)
I'll be the blonde :p

i dont see why ppl dont make it easier and just say 2 males 1 female.. less reasearch involved... ive been trying to find that for hours as well...
no luck with a google search... on childrens or spotted...

Look in the last post, I gave you a link for a google search with a TON of results :)
People use the numbers because it's easier when you write out your whole collection :) Less clutter.

i typed that exact thing in. and it came up with tons of results but nothing usefull... i think ive been doing a little to much reasearch... lol

Any other cheap shots you want to share with me?

If that was in fact a cheap shot at you I would just like to say I saw nothing wrong with what Trevor said and IMO he added more information than you lol. I dont want to sound like im instigating but I felt I should say something since I felt he was helpful.

The Barron's book "Pythons" covers all the basic stuff for approx $10 & has lots of pics etc. of the different species. A published work is always more desirable than "opinions" on the net IMHO (ya I know its a Net opinion LOL I'm a hypocrit!) Remember though that peoples experiences are always good in addition as well. Don't turn into one of those "Book Says" people LOL Also I'll comment on Heather's sexing example 1.2.3 = 1 male, 2 females & 3 "unsexed" specimens not hatchlings. Though I totally agree that more often than not the unsexed ones are hatchlings, but don't assume that they are just because they are unsexed. I know lots of folks who have lets say 0.0.1 Childrens that could be 8 years old, but they never bothered to sex it because they never really cared as it makes no difference being a pet to them. Cheers Mark
P.S. Childrens are Awesome to own! First Pythons I ever bred.
P.P.S. Why is it more often than not opinions have to come with attitude? Lighten up out there!

thanks alot everyone...
but does anyone know where i can find a breeder other than the show coming up... i wont be able to get it by then..

I know Roy Stockwell breeds them because that's where I got mine. He sometimes sell to Port Credit so if you see any at Port Credit all you have to do is ask and they may be able to tell you if they came from Roy or not. Either way with Children's you won't have to worry about WC.

thanks... after all i decided to look for a book.... its not specifacly on childrens but it doesgive you good coverage...
if you dont mind me asking about how much did it run you... you dont have to give me exact just ball park.... a pet store here is selling one for like 350

If you can avoid it, it's best not to buy from a pet store. They are often overpriced, and there are about 498548975 other reasons not to. Have you looked into breeders?
peterm15
11-15-04, 09:41 PM
thats what im looking for... i would perfer a breeder for the soal reason of health... is there somewhere i can find them or should i check magazines...
oh ya and can you name thoes 498548975 other reasons... i would really like to know...lol:D

I think you best bet would be to check Canadian classified sections on pages like this one and ********. I only menthion Port Credit becasue I know they sell Roy's stuff. Roy Stockwell has been doing this for 25 years. He produces some great stuff.

I'm too lazy to name the other 498548975, but:
-Petstores charge and arm and a leg...
-Petstores don't take great care of their animals...
-Buying from pet stores (even just to 'rescue' an ill-treated animal) supports them, and they will just get more in...
Although, I highly recommend Port Credit Pet Center like Trevor mentioned.
