View Full Version : Classifieds Reminder

Hey guys...
Lately we've been seeing a TON of people reposting ads for the same animals more than once a month...this is just a reminder to let you know that only ONE ad for the SAME animal/animals are allowed each month. Duplicate ads will be taken down.
These are taken straight out of the TOS:
sSnakeSs.com Classified Forum Rules.
Do NOT post more then 1 ad for each species of animal(s) you have for sale.
You may post your animal for sale ONCE in the month. If you post the same animal for sale more then once in the month, your ad will be taken down
This helps keep new ads fresh on the newer pages longer, cuts down on the clutter and makes it fair for everyone.
Replying to your ads to state changes or the fact that an animals is sold IS allowed (doing it to bump up ads is not), however the feature is currently disabled and we are working to fix this...
If everyone could skim the classifieds rules before posting ads, it would make things better for everyone.
They can be found here: http://www.ssnakess.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=8018
If anyone has any complaints or questions feel free to PM a Moderator, but I'd like to point out that the classifieds are FREE and available to all, which is more than you get out of most herp sites.
Thanks for your patience and cooperation :D
While we're reminding people of things, I'll just throw out a reminder that we ask you all to keep your Signatures no longer then 4 lines.. We've been noticing a few in the 6+ range in the last couple of days.. Thanks for the cooperation everyone :D

Seems quite fair to me!
Matt K - I have been to other forums where they allow IMG links in profiles.....all I have to say is it is QUITE annoying. Not only are they HUGE...but takes up HALF the stinking page. I like the 3 line rule much better.
Thanks,
B.U.
Yeah, I agree.. Some people are very moderate when it comes to their sigs and have a small banner or whatever, but others add like 12 different sig banners and you have to scroll down for 2 minutes just to get to the next post.. It IS annoying.. :D

So let me get this straight... we ARE allowed to use a feature that is currently disabled, but we aren't allowed to use the only alternative to the currently disabled feature?
Am I the only one who sees a VERY big problem with this?
You WILL be allowed to reply to your Ads SOON.. However, That is NOT the 'only alternative' as I am SURE you have noticed the 'edit' feature that you have?????

Well, the edit feature doesn't exactly make the post show up when someone does a search for new posts, does it? Sometimes new information is just as valid as a new post. Who reads old posts that they've already seen? I don't. I use the "search for new posts" feature, as do many other people here. That means if I slash the price on something I'm advertising, many people miss that.
Would it not make more sense, if someone posts a new ad for the same animal, to delete the OLD ad? That's what I do on the TARAS forums, and it works quite well. Just a suggestion, please don't crucify me.

Because we would have duplicate ads constantly. The way the classified ads are run now, it's free of clutter, easy to read, and fair to everyone. I put up this post because I was moving 3-5 duplicate posts per day, and this is only myself.
That's what I do on the TARAS forums, and it works quite well.
Then why not just use the TARAS forums if ssnakess isn't up to your standards? This isn't TARAS, it's ssnakess.
If you know that edited classifieds aren't found in the New Posts feature, then browse the classifieds once in a while. If you choose to browse the site that way, that's up to you. I don't, and I catch every ad no problem. People who edit their ads often edit the subject line adding "new price", or "updated", and these ads are NOT at all easily missed.
I originally had this thread locked because people like yourself will ALWAYS find something to complain about with this generous, free service...why can't some people just accept that this is the way things are done?
This is just a reminder to read the rules.

How hard is it to simply go to the Classifieds and just search them? If someone is looking to buy something...they arent going to stop at the New Posts.

I also use the "View New Posts Since Last Visit" button, and, although I don't view the classifieds much here (since I'm not located in Canada), I know that whenever I DO look at classifieds, I don't usually view the same ones over and over.
I know what you mods are trying to say, but I also think that Ken has a valid point. Why couldn't you allow the new post to remain if it has been altered, and delete the old one? You wouldn't always have to do this, but just until the bugs are worked out. That way, people who change their ad will also get a fair chance of it being viewed.
Then, when the reply is working again, it will then only be allowed to update info, and you can go back to deleting duplicate posts? Wouldn't this be helpful to both parties, the members and the mods?
The problem in that is that too many people post 'new' ad's stating that the animals are 'still available' or, 'here's the pics for the ad below'..
I also understand where you guys are coming from in that we could just delete the old ads, but why even have the rule of only posting once a month if we're going to delete the old ads and leave the new ones?? People will post a new ad claiming that it's an update when in actuality, it's the exact same post.. Know what I mean???
All we're asking is that everyone wait it out and be patient while we get the reply feature working again... This way, when you have a legit reason to reply to your ad, you can do so.. However, people that reply to their ad with, 'bump' or 'still available' will notice their ads will be taken down, as it's not fair to others who actually follow the rules of the classifieds..

That I agree 100% on. If it is just to 'bump' it, then delete it. But if someone legitimately posts an update, why punish them when the site is not allowing them update?
If a new post is deleted, the only way to know if it is not new, is to find and view the old one. Wouldn't it be just as easy to delete the old one if the new post is indeed a true update? Afterall, one would have already had to find the old ad.
Just trying to find a happy medium.

heather for a mod your pretty quick to jump on people and tell them not to use ssnakess. This isnt the first time ive seen you post somthing like that, I think Ken was just trying to give you guys some Ideas because he has experience with other forums. I just think that reply was kind of uncalled for.
*edit* we all know the classifieds are free and we appreciate it, it doesnt need to be rubbed in our faces everytime a discussion starts
Since each animal can only be advertised once a month, an ad being updated with new info could be 3-4 weeks old. While not everyone uses the "view new posts" feature (alhtough I do), how many people browse through the last months worth of ads on a regular basis? Right now there's about 100 ads from November, and we're only on the 12th. Your suggestion seems to be that I read the subject lines of 100+ ads regularily, and try to guess wether they've been updated or not.
If the feature is going to be fixed, cool. In the meantime, I think Ken made a pretty good suggestion, so I cant really understand why he's being told to bugger off.
I think new (legitimately updated) ads should be allowed until the reply feature is fixed. Users could include a link the old ad in the new ad. This would make it easier for the mods to locate it for inspection and deletion.
I placed an ad at the beginning of the month and it quickly got 150 + views. I have been watching it for the last few days... since being on the 4th page, it has seen 14 additonal views, half of which are probably my editing. Btw, editing might be okay if we could edit the title, then we could include words like "EDIT" or "UPDATE".

Corr, that is a great idea, the only problem with that.. We already ask that people let us know when the animal that they have for sale has sold so that we can delete their ad and keep the classifieds updated. I'd say MAYBE 2% of the members are doing this..

Again, you're right and I do apologize, as I just realized that you guys can't edit the title that is scene by everyone.. I guess we'll (MODs) have to come to a conclusion on this one and come back and update you guys.. Maybe deleting the old ad's when you guys post an update is the solution.. However, saying that your animal is still available, will not be acceptable.

Understood. I realize this is a problem and one of the reasons that the classified forums are cleared every month. If members do not follow the guidelines set out, delete it, simple as that. Again, we are all thankful that these forums are free.
Cory
I've also noticed that once an add is off the first page it drops from 100-200+ view in a few days to 10-15 views in a week.
People very rarely go to the other pages,We live in a now society and just want whats new and now. I think that the veiw numbers speak for themselve.
I think that erasing the classifieds every two weeks would be better.
Piers
The bottom line is this is a FREE service. There is hardly ANY of the like available in the states, We are very lucky to even get the free advertising we can. VERY lucky.
Matt does a LOT of classifieds mod work. A LOT. And since he is not being paid for him time, but WANTS to help, I think all we can do is be patient, and enjoy the features we are already getting for FREE.
Obviously there are still a few kinks that need to be worked out, but unless someone isn't getting what they paid for, it's already a MUCH better system than most places. :D :D
Marisa
I also wanted to add one thing....
I am not sure how the other mods feel but threads like this CAN be very good. You guys all have good suggestions and while I am defending the classifieds, we also listen to all the ideas because I mean it is YOU using them. So any defending mods do is just that we can only go so fast and make so many happy but at the same time I think we can all agree, suggestions are Good!

I see absolutely no circumstace in my previous post in this thread telling anyone to leave ssnakess.com. I was just pointing out that it's just the way they're ran.(I'm not trying to pick on Ken and I'm sorry if it came off that way, he's a good guy from what I see on the forums...I was just using his opinion as an example for everyone who shares the same opinion as him.)
I DID say:
Then why not just use the TARAS forums if ssnakess isn't up to your standards? This isn't TARAS, it's ssnakess.
THEN I said:

If I told anyone to leave the site it wouldn't be Invictus/Ken :p
I'm a big fan of keeping things fair, that's all I'm looking for regarding the classifieds.
Thanks :)

Im not sure when becoming a moderator started to mean that you could no longer have an opinion..
It seems like more and more people are comparing ssnakess to other forums.. Saying that another forum is doing something a better way, so why don't we.. It's just frustration on the side of the MODs.. We're doing everything we can to have this site run as smoothly as possible and keep all the memebers happy..

This sounds like the best compromise between fair and feasible to me right now.
One thing I suggested way before though, which I think would be even better, is to just have a script on crontab that periodically checks the posts in the classifieds section and automatically deletes them once they're a certain age (like a week). This way, all posts are left up an equal amount of time and get circulated frequently.

Having an opinion and expressing it in a patronizing manner are two different things. I understand better than anyone how frustrating it can be, but I was under the impression that mods on this board were selected for their friendly and helpful attitudes, not their sarcastic and patronizing attitudes.
Unfortunately, I've been seeing more sarcasm and harsh words from your new mods than I have from most of the member base as of late. This may be something else you may want to try and curb, after all, you are the hosts of this fine site.
Again, just a suggestion.

I think a big part of the problem why so many people take things the wrong way is because there is no tone of voice when writing on forums and many people take things way out of proportion. They "read between the lines" so to speak and read the posts with attitude and faulse tones where none were actually meant. It's easy to misunderstand what someone is trying to say sometimes because you can't see that persons facial expressions or hear the tone of their voice.
Believe me I know from experience. I'm a very imperturbable person, a bit shy and sometimes too easy going. lol, and I've been thought to have "tone" in my post before where it definately wasn't intended.
And I just want to say "Thanks" to all the mods. You do work hard and should be applauded and appreciated for it. I don't think it gets said enough!

I have really been trying to be nice to everyone, make things clear while at the same time explaining delays...I have been trying to steer threads away from arguements when I can, and add a little "just imho" at the end of posts, etc.

I call it as I see it Marisa. I have nothing against you personally, hell, your posts often have the same tone mine do. You and I are two people who are strong-minded and have the courage to debate strongly, and have our opinion stand out - but I'm not a moderator. That is the difference. I was merely offering up a point of constructive criticism, that's all. Please don't be offended.
Take Linds for instance. I bet if she and I were to have a face to face debate, she'd go up one side of me and down the other. :) But on ssnakess, her posts have an air of professionalism to them. Being a mod has its downfalls. Sometimes you can't always say what you'd really like to.

I think this was all too subtly directed at me, Marisa... I haven't seen any sarcasm from you since becoming a mod and think you're doing an awesome job...(feel free to slip me 5$ under the table at the show :D)I think what we say often comes across as sarcasm just because some people are readily prepared to perceive it that way. It seems no one is ever satisfied!
BoidsUnlimited- While your opinion is just as important as mine, Invictus, or anyone else in this thread....bringing up your ideas on other threads would probably be better left out of this conversation, as I am sure Invictus would agree, they have nothing to do with each other.

Hmmm... I don't feel I got edgy in that thread, nor in this one. I had some suggestions and constructive criticism for the mods in this thread.... I admitted that I need to improve my conditions in the Quarantine thread, and that doing it improperly is just as bad as not doing it at all.
So, how have I been on the edgy side? If you knew anything about me and what I'm dealing with in my personal life right now (which you don't) you would know why I've been edgy lately, and believe me.... friendly advice from this community is NOT enough to put me on edge.
Well that's your thoughts. I still have no clue where I have been sarcastic since becoming a mod, or harsh. I know of ONE thread I was involved in with a "harsh" opinion since becoming a mod. That's it. Mods are allowed to have opinions and differances with someone else.
So if that makes me less "professional" than Linds or any other mod.....I don't know what to tell you. Apparently, I am doing "o.k." as I haven't been asked to leave. And I would hope me AND Heather are both seen as good additions by the website. Unfortuantly I see clearly that is not so.
Best I can do is try.
Marisa
I'm sarcastic and or joking 95% of the time when I come across as 'rude'.. The people that know me personally get this side of me, but other's take it as me being an a-hole... I think the same can be said for more then half of the members.. Take Favelle for instance.. He's ALWAYS joking but people think he's being a ****.. However those of us who understand his sense of humour know not to take what he's saying to heart...
I don't find Favelle offensive at all... it just seems to me he has this going expectation of a modicum of common sense and usage of brain cells implied in his posts. People insufficient in these areas often take offense to his posts instead of learning from them.
I personally believe that complete candidness and honesty, even to the point of bluntness, is more respectful than humoring someone (i.e. telling someone how to stop being an idiot rather than treating them like one).

In the last 30 minutes we have found around 10 Duplicate AD's.. Being the nice person that Heather is, she's decided to just merge these ads rather then full out removing them.. I have also noticed that a couple members have decided to post something, then delete it only to post it again hoping that we won't notice. I assure you, we DO and WILL notice. If we find people continuing to do this, will just make it so those members can't use the Classifieds anymore.. There's no reason for people to not follow the SIMPLE rules of the classifieds..
Also, if you're sent a PM stating why your thread was moved (duplicate) and you read it (we can see when you do) and continue to post duplicate ads, it will start to count as a warning, and remember, three strikes and you're out..
This is NOT open for discussion now, so this thread from now on, will be locked..
