I use 3 of the 4 you listed. All but pet shops. About the only thing that most pet shops are good for is feeders.

I didn't vote because there isn't just one method I utilize to find info when I need it. Often, I use multiple sources just to be sure as well. I can rule out asking the pet store for advice though :D

I use 3 of the 4, the libary sucks here so I don't use books. My local pet shop is awesome. Not all pet shops are bad like petco.

Hi! Me to I use 3 of the 4 methods you list! Books, internet and breeders. I think it's important to have more than one source of information because we can make comparison. I like to have a lot of opinions to help me to choose my way to go!!!

I would have voted for the top two options, but that's not possible. Before I found THIS web-site, I got 99% of my info from books. Now it's mostly from the forums here and other recomended sites.

Well, this is the way I look at it:

1) Books and magazines become outdated VERY quickly. Some information that was Godspeak 3 years ago is now ridiculed and thought of as utter nonesense. On the other hand, reading this material objectively lets you interpret it in your own way and sometimes make excellent deductions.

2) The Internet is fast and holds a TON of information, although it sometimes translates DIRECTLY from the aformentioned books. You still have to take it with a grain of salt, but at least its free and easy! (My favorite kind, ha ha!).

3) Pet Shops? Ummm.......yeah........... (that's about as sarcastic as I could possibly type!).

4) Breeders. VERY good source of info as they've "been there and done that"! Only trouble is, some are a$$-heads and don't always share their discoveries/secrets acurately. Also, they don't let you interpret. They make you think THEIR way. If its worked for them, then it must work for everybody. So in a way, its less educational that reading the outdated books. Ha ha. Its not all bad though, most breeders are great and are just happy to talk about their passion!!

So yeah, my answer would have to be a combo of #'s 1,2, and 4. Depends on the animal in question as well. I mean, if I had a query on monitor husbandry, I wouldn't exactly look in a book as most of what we know has surfaced in the last VERY short while. Just an example.

I start off by reading a book or article so that I have a foundation (and dont sound too dumb) before talking to other herpers/breeders. I never bother with pet shops unless they specialize in reptiles, as they often preach nonsense. I find most books to be either too technical (scientific names for every molecule in the snake) or too general (snakes shed their skin and are not slimy, kiddies). The best source of information is the internet, there are excellent articles out there like Melissa Kaplan's site, NERD, corallus.com etc. and forums like this one.

Since it has been brought up that books tend to get to get outdated. In the years I have been keeping reptiles. I have seen things come back again that went out of favor. And if you talk with breeders taht have been doing this for years. Most will tell you that things seem to work in cycles. I said this to support the fact that books make a great base for knowledge. Yes somethings go out of date or just out of the trend. But overall you cannot beat the information that is available through them. Where do you think that the majority of the people on the internet got their information? My guess is books.
