Hey all! I'm in the middle of a mite infestation. So here I am bathing my burm (or trying to) and it's a couple pretty good shots of his markings.
BTW...can anyone give me an idea of how much of a pest strip I should have in an enclosure that measures six feet long by 4 feet high and 3 feet deep?
(PS...I use Prevent-o-mite when I clean the cages and soak them, but this big cage has proven extremely difficult to get them all out!)
Thanks in advance and I hope you like the pics.

For an enclosure that big.. I would think about using biological warfare :)
Predatory mites that feed only on snake mites... they are much more efficient at getting rid of mite problems... Ive had nothing but sucess with them :) Do a search for them... give it a shot :)

I'm glad you said that because I was having trouble justifying almost $30 for a half a liter of those little buggers. I guess I'll give them a shot!

Use Nix diluted with water, and put in a spray bottle.
Works very well.

Nix is a lice shampoo that is available at most pharmacies without prescription. Price is usually $15 CDN.
I recommend using Black Knight. Nix is basically the same thing as Provent-A-Mite, and you will need to be thoroughly washing that enclosure, so it likely won't be any more successful. It is just a medicated soap, and needs to make contact with everything in order to be effective. Black Knight can be used to even treat whole rooms, and in fact, if you have ANY invertabrates in the room, you need to remove them prior to treating the enclosure, as if they are in the same room where BK is sprayed, they will kick the bucket along with all the mites  You also do not need to use nearly as much BK as you do Nix, since it does not need to soak them.
Clean the enclosure as best you can, then spray it with Black Knight and close it to allow it to get in to all the cracks (it's an aerosol). I usually let it stay like that for an hour, then I air it out completely before placing the *clean* snake in the enclosure, with minimal acessories (I just put a clean water bowl in). When bathing the snake, I use a bit of Ivory dishsoap in the water, followed by a good rinse to get it all off. Some people spary the snakes with BK, but I don't recommend it.

After using black knight, how long do you air out the enlosure before placing the snake back in?
Also...will it kill the mites that are on the snake? He's pretty big and though I get rid of all I can during a bathing session, I cannot get all the mites off of him.
