View Full Version : garter snakes anyone?
I have a real piglette of a western ribbon snake named Wilma and wanted to see if there were any other garter fans here?

The first snake I ever kept was an eastern garter snake. He was cool. I kept him all winter, fed him like crazy, and let him go the next spring. I was like 12 years old. He gew over 12" in just that one winter (it was like 8 months). Since then, garters have a place in my heart.

Me too. I kept them when I was younger (12 or 13) and I had some this summer that had babies. I let the whole lot go in late August due to space and money issues. I think they are a snake that doen't get enough credit. I'm not saying they are the best, but they don't deserve the "oh, it's just a garter snake" reaction every time. They are pretty cool in my books.

do you breed them at all?
I adore garters and ribbons. I have a western ribbon and a pair of plains garters and they are just so much fun to watch when they fish.
I used to wild collect eastern garters all the time when I was a kid, not realizing that it's illegal for me to do so. Now I keep non-native species and enjoy them for being "exotic" in my state. ;-)

Did somebody say "garter snakes" and not tell me?!?
At the moment, I keep Butler's, wandering, red-spotted, red-sided and eastern (normal and flame) garters, and I bred the wanderings and red-sideds this year.
To say that I'm mildly interested in garter snakes is like saying that Captain Ahab was mildly interested in whales.
My favourite snakes, bar none.
I've <a href="http://www.mcwetboy.com/articles/#herp">written a few articles about them</a>, and I have a rather lengthy <a href="http://www.mcwetboy.com/gartercare/">care sheet</a> (that's still a work in progress), if you're interested.

But, but, I haven't even added the stuff about hibernation and the special things to look out for with baby snakes . . . !
