View Full Version : Shedding ?
I have a 3 yr old normal corn that shed about 3 weeks ago. He shed as he normally does. But now some of his scales are lifting. Not the whole scale, it just looks like a shed but only on several individual scales. Can anyone tell me what is happening? Maybe its the rocks I put in the one corner of his cage to spruce it up a little. Any ideas?
That also happened to my 3 year old male for a few weeks, wierd enough. However he is now in shed and they seemed to of disapeared so maybe just wait for your next shed? My temps are correct and I've humidity up to 80% for shedding its normaly around 50%. I think mine is a result of a scratch he got while feeding live ( I do feed restrained live meaning holding down with tongs while the snake eats, but you can't avoid everything) anyways i treated it with polysporin. Did your snake possibly scratch itself? I've never heard of it happening to anyone else befor... odd.

Its happened to one of mine also. I discovered it had mites. I treated the infestation and never seen it (the individual raised scales) afterwards.
Yup, like Fishandsnakelov said, mites can be the culprit in individually raised scales. Have you looked beneath the scales? When mites wedge themselves underneath they cause the scale to sort of pop up.
Are they creases by any chance? Another thing that can happen (although I've never seen them in a corn before) are when a snake folds its body the scales will get bent in half along the line.
Bacterial infections can also sometimes cause patches of raised scales, which are often accompanied by discolouration and/or flakiness.
There is no discoloration at all, they are just lifting. I haven't noticed any mites, and he is on paper towel. I noticed that even some of his ventral scales are starting to lift. Could this maybe be the result of a bad shed last time? His last shed was no different than any other shed before but this time it came off in two pieces instead of one this time. I checked him over to see if he had any old shed left on him and he doesn't. I will definately treat him for mites anyways though. What is best to use. I've never had a problem with mites before. But I traded him away and then got him back about a month and a half ago so who knows.
