Hi, I am having a discussion with another user on another board about hot snakes and if they are Illegal or not I know you need permits to own them in Canada, but does anyone know where i would find information on the topics and the laws here in Canada??I just want to find out cause if someone out there sees someone saying that it is legal to have them the some one else will go out and get it thinking it is legal... I just want to clear this up
Thanks to all

It depends on what city you live in. Some cities have laws prohibiting them while others, such as Pt Colborne do not.

It is not illegal to bring them into Canada. It's just illegal to keep them in many cities in Canada. It really is a catch 22. For example, you can legally import them into Pearson Int. Airport however the moment you take posession of them, you have broken the by-law which prohibits venomous reptiles. It's what happens when you mix federal, provincial and municipal laws.

I've heard they're legal to keep in BC, but that doesn't do me any good as i'm in Ontario.

The only hot I'd like to keep is a Massassauga Rattler but I'm told you need special permits for them as they're protected here in Ontatrio. :(

always a toss-up, Here in New Mexico they are legal, here in Dona Ana county they are legal, but in Las Cruces they are illegal so I have to live outside the city limits. Sandoval county where the Int'l airport is says they are illegal so I have to bring them into Texas for pick-up lol. Sounds like Canada is similar.

OK so in Canada is legal to have them imported in but the minute you take possession it is Illegal?

that depends on where you take possession.
