i was interested in getting a tarantula, i have done some research and bought a really great book on arachnids*sp
what are you opoinions on keeping them and if so where would a good place to get one?
i'm in bc on vancouver island

Of course its worth it!
You are interested in them, that's the first step. They are far more fascinating in person than they are in pictures. Let's put it this way...people who initially had no interest in arachnids, get intrigued by their friend's/partner's/child's/neighbour's spider, and then get one themselves. (There are many threads about 'why I got into arachnids').
Seeing as you are already interested in them, you will be just blown away by how nice of a pet they make!

I bought my first tarantula (Ruby, a Brachypelma smithi) about a year ago out of pure curiosity. Since then I have acquired thirty nine more. I find them extremely interesting, easy to care for and house, and sometimes very personable.
Start with an Avicularia if you prefer arboreal (versicolors are beautiful and very docile) , Brachypelma or Grammostola (smithis and aureostriatas respectively are wonderful starter species) if you like ground dwellers and you will not be disappointed.

i used to have a living room like that, but once i got to around 400 adults my ex-wife (note the EX :D ) made me build a heated garage for everything, then my collecting REALLY went mad! lol

i used to love it, never noticed that i had a missing 12" Scolopendra when i moved everything over to the garage, until one dark night it came walking, walking, walking from behind the TV......arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrgggggggghhhhhhhhh!! thats what 18" tweezers are for :D

i when to vancover last summer and got tons of stuff from west aqariums and brought it back they gave me me 100 discoid roaches for $3 becase i took all there matids :) LOL!!!
