What to get, what to get?!

Well, my boyfriend is considering giving our pair of tokays to his sister. Yeah, they're cool, but it's not like they let me get attached to them. So we will definitely end up getting another pet if he gives them away. We don't know what to get! I told him that maybe this time we should actually put some thought into it beore we walk into the store! He really wants a veiled, but I've almost got him convinced that it wouldn't be practical right now. We need something that won't take up a whole lot of space, as we will be moving in the next year and that would be a big hassel. We also need something that is fairly low maintenance. We love all types of pets, so I'm not just asking about herps. I'm thinking along the lines of leos, or a hedgehog (or both!). We already have 2 mice, a rosehair tarantula, 3 bettas, and an african dwarf frog. Please give me suggestions!!!

what you're looking for is a snake. Feed it once a week (less often as they get older), clean up after it once a week, it doesn't need to be taken for walks or need daily brushings.
the food can convienently stay in the freezer, and it doesn't make a mess when it eats.

If you get something like a corn, king or rosy boa the size will stay pretty small. also snakes don't bark, chirp, chitter or meow.

and depending on the snake you can get a few months of no maintenance by brumating it.

I'd definitely go with a snake, very easy to take care of and if you get one on the smaller side, won't take up much space. Like the others have mentionned, corn snake and rosy boas are good, I would suggest a pueblan milk snake. They only get to be 30-36" adult and have nice coloring.

I saw a show on Animal Planet that showcased pet skunks....they even had a show and gave out ribons...lol...to each their own.

Well, if I get a snake it'd probably be a rosy boa. I think we wanna get something we've never had before, though. I'm gonna talk to him and see what he's leaning towards. Keep the suggestions coming, though!

Ive got a guinea pig for sale, they are awesome pets and much friendlier than my pet mice lol. Stays in the cage, but you can let her out to run around the house too, so its the best of both the caged mamal and non-caged mamal. they love to be cuddled but if you leave 'em alone they are ok too

along with the rosy are other sand boas that allow a more relaxed humidity requirment(meaning higher in this case) that might be necessary in Florida. tarantulas, millipedes, centipedes, and scorpions are cool too, just be careful what you get if your looking to handle them. Pac-man frog, I like the albinos, your location alleviates some keeping problems so something like a brazilian rainbow boa with commitment and care is possible and can live in a smaller enclosure for the first year or more. Being in Florida also gives you access to several dealers and breeders that are well known and usually are more than willing to allow tours to look at their stock if the don't have a retail outlet, that can show you whats available in the state.

crimsonking: I hated to tell you, but I gave her away. I had her about a month when I moved into the dorm, but I couldn't take her with me (rules+phobic roommate). I left her at my boyfriend's house which is only 15 minutes away, but I found that I wasn't around enough (nor he, since he's in the Navy) to handle her and I didn't want her to get too skittish (sp?). After much thought, I gave her to a family friend who is a special ed. teacher, and happens to have many, many snakes, lizards, turtles, and a buch of other small pets (including a pair of pigmy goats). She loves Cal. Kings and is taking good care of her. She even said that if I want her back when I move out of the dorm I can have her. I'm just shy about having such fast moving snakes. I think I might be best sticking to boas and pythons! Thank you, though, I really appreciated having her. And she is in a good home in a classroom where many kids learn to appreciate herps!

Oh, and the catch to a new pet is that we will probably be moving up North in the next year, so we won't be in sunny Florida much longer. Oh, and we have a rosehair, and used to have an Emperor Scorp. I guess I'm looking for advise on how you guys care for your animals, like leos. I think we should get leos as our next pet. I'm just so indecisive right now! Thanks, guys!

Dwarf monitor. Easily the "smartest" in the reptile world. It would give you YEARS of enjoyment and amazement. Just read up on them first!

I think you're already on the right track -- if you're not going to get a snake (my NEW passion :)), then go with a leo (my first passion) -- they're great :) Very forgiving in their care, laid back, and ever so cute ;) Plus when you tell people that you have a gecko, it doesn't seem to freak them out nearly as much as other reptiles -- LOL :) Don't know why, but somehow people don't seem to think of geckos as reptiles really... maybe it's all those cute Telus ads ;). Hey, think we could convince telus to use a snake in an ad?? Maybe that would cure some people of their stupid phobias... hehe...

Oooh, I think someone should use a tarantula in an ad...that would go over well!!! I've already educated my friends about how there are some not-so-friendly geckos out there (our tokays). I'm gonna talk to him today and see what he wants to do. Maybe his sister won't want the tokays anyway...we'll see.
