View Full Version : Question abt incomplete shed
My juvie corn shed the other day, but it was an incomplete shed, most of the skin on the head did not come off. I soaked him a bit and got him to tug off his eyecaps, but he was getting so upset by my rubbing that I stopped before removing all the unshed skin. There is still a bit left on his snout, should I soak him again tomorrow and rub off the rest? If so, is there a good way to do it beside my current method: cover his head in a wet paper towel, and rub against his head when he pulls it out from between the towel? Thanks.

Incomplete sheds may be caused by mites, if you got him from a pet store, definately check for mites. Corns dont need high humidity, but next time he sheds spray the cage with warm water once a day. Be careful tough, to much humidity can cause some nasty infections.
For now, put him in a rubbermaid overnight with about 1/2 inch-1 inch of warm water. With my boas I would throw in a folded up bath towell for them to rub on, in this case you can use a hand towell or something. Good luck and welcome to the site.

Thanks, Dan, for the advice and the welcome.
He is mite-free.
Unfortunately I was out of town for his shed, so I actually don't know how many days ago he shed (could be up to 5). Is there a certain amount of time after which it's not safe to try to remove partial sheds?

Try running a search of this site for shedding problems & you'll find lots of good posts, mark
I read through some of the old posts, and have just tried putting him in a container of lukewarm water with some paper towels for about an hour. I then rubbed what looked like the incomplete shed with a q-tip, and can see a corner come up, but I don't want to accidentally rip off a scale because I thought it looks like unshed skin. I included some jpgs of his head, hopefully someone who knows what a partial shed looks like can tell me if that's what it is. Take a look at the two splotches directly in front of his eyes. Thanks for any help.
