Total Lunar Eclipse: October 27-28, 2004

QUOTE.

Earthlings are about to be treated to a total lunar eclipse, just in time for Halloween. For more than an hour Wednesday night, the moon will be covered entirely by Earth's shadow and resemble a glowing pumpkin.

With the Earth passing directly between the sun and the moon, the only light hitting the full moon will be from the home planet's sunrises and sunsets, thus the orange and red hue.

It will be a late-night show for people in North and South America and a pre-dawn display early Thursday for those in Europe and western Africa. Aside from their entertainment value, total lunar eclipses give scientists a chance to assess the quality of Earth's atmosphere. Ash from volcanic eruptions, for example, can make an eclipsed moon look much darker. The recent eruptions of Mount St. Helens in Washington have consisted of far more steam than ash, and therefore the moon should appear bright and coppery red Wednesday night, NASA said.

The next total eclipse of the moon will not be until March 2007.

EVERYONE and ANYONE:

That can see it and get great photos of it from where ever you are please post onto this thread.

If lots of people can do it, we can all see the different views of this special event.

Thanks to all that can help out.

I've never understood why anyone cares. We know the planet is round, we know the moon is round and we know the sun is round.
A lunar eclipse looks no different than the changing phases, only speeded up...
Whats the big deal? Unless you're camping above the tree line with no flashlights and can't find the outhouse, whats all the excitement? I'm more interested in heavenly bodies I can see inside :)
Sorry, just not a space guy I guess... but call me if you see an asteroid with a thousand mile tail that might land on my local Dollarama..LOL

ROY:

LOL...I understand, its like seeing certain sprts for me. Every year a new champ most of the time, who cares really other than the fans, but really being champ now and later someone else really just a waste of time in my opinion. Reason I compare, is though I love seeing beyond our world, this event does not happen everyday let alone every year.

And in most cases does not cost a thing to just look up and take in some beauty.

My 2 cents.

Perspective Roy. The sheer magnitude of the objects involved and the concept of what it is actually taking to make the event happen. People find that interesting.

And it looked damn cool! Not just a moon turning dark. It went reddy-orange and it looked surreal!

Lol, It did! Unfortunately, there was a very light fog and it "blured the image a little". I also didnt have any cameras available at the time(dad took them with him on trip). Enjoy the last sights while you still can, it wont happen again for a few years!

We did take some pictures but they are not the best all it looked like was the moon full and then slowly get covered until all i could see was a black sky through my camera..

It was nice and clear in Kitchener during the eclipse. I took pictures but my camera just isn't the kind to get good moon pictures. All I got was a light blob, distorted by the street lights that kept jumping into the field of view :)
