Australian Herps

Going to Australia for 3 months, November-February, during their summer months. You know what that means! HERP HEAVEN! What should I be looking for and in what regions of the great Down Under?

alot of venomous snakes so make sure you know what your picking up. They also have a ton of awsome non venomous herps including frillies, beardies, some pythons a few moniters and crocs. Have fun

Keep an eye out for them skinks too. Tons of skink species to look at.

I spent 4 months backpacking Auz...

All I can say is save a bit of extra money and buy yourself a tin can of car once down there. You'll find it really hard to get to good herping spots without one. You'll also need large amounts of money for beer.

Are you planning on bringing them back to the USA if you find any? How hard is it to do that? I'm guessing you need lots of permits to bring animals from there into the US. If its not that hard, heck I'll start traveling lol

I heard if you're a visitor you need a permit to simply photograph herps... don't know if that is true these days, but they have a reputation for not tolerating much messing with the fauna.
Dave would probably know.

Yeah I was reading on a site where a guy was photgraphing the THORNY DEVILS!!!! (I will not rest until I find one), and he had to get permits to photograph them. I don't know if it cost anything though, maybe just a clearance or something? I'm excited to see the frillies and thorny devils.

If I found someone BREEDING frillies there, or something else cool, could I buy them and bring them back if I get the proper permits? Or do the closed doors apply to all fauna, both CB and WC?

That would be cool if I could bring a nice pair back, maybe Stever Irwin line? :D

Go to the Glasshouse Mountains just north of Brisbane for the Australia Zoo... for me :D

I miss it and I'm so jealous it's not even funny. Watch out for the mosquitos.

Maybe I'll join a herp community similar to this one, but one based in Australia so I can get up to date with their regulations. Has anyone here seen a thorny devil? I can't wait to see animals in the wild that we pay hundreds of dollars for here ahaha. Blue tongue skinks, frillies, knob tails, water dragons, WOOHOO!

Also, how many people here have been to Australia? Any recommendations of things to do (doesn't HAVE to include herping, I guess) I'll be around Melbourne most of my time there, but will probably head all over.
