View Full Version : Typical fall behaviour?
Well Briseas my female is going through typical female fall behaviour. Totally PMSing!! LOL, I open her enclosure, she hisses, I go to pick her up to weigh her, she hisses, I put her back, she hisses. LOL she even hisses at her rats, not that she has eaten one in 2 weeks hopefully tonight. She is hanging out on the cooler end of her enclosure too, shoved her water dish over to the warmer end and lays as far from her heat as she can for long periods, YAY.
On the other hand Recoil my male is acting up too. Any of your males do this at this time of year?? I have watched the breeding ball pythons video and didn't notice anything about males acting up around breeding season unless introduced to another male. He is hissing, tries to "jump" literally when I take him out to weigh him and isn't eating at the moment either wich is odd for him as he has never refused a meal for me in the past! He was probed as a definate male at the fall ERAS show but he is acting odd, LOL, maybe not for a ball but for himself anyway. Any ideas?
well there could be a few factors making your ball python act this way. The first possible stress. Do you keep your male and female ball pythons togther? What is the tempature at the warm end of the cage? Also if it's to big of cage with too few hideboxes she also may being feeling stressed. So either try downzing her cage or buying more hideboxes. Also it could be mites? Snajkes get very agitated and tend to refuse meals while infested. Have you checked for any? They will usually appear around the head area piticularly the eyes. There small black sometimes red and move around. Also maybe she's in shed? When in shed they also don;t appricate being bothered to much. Another cuase may be if you constantly try to handle her and she is housed in a high traffic or loud area of your house which may cause this.
I doubt it's because of the breeding season but you never know.
Keep us updated.

I'm going to disagree with EVERYTHING in the above post, having read enough about your history, I would assume that the above-mentioned possibilities have all been taken care of. However Kayla that was a super wonderful textbook regurg.
I'm going to venture that breeding season is the EXACT reason why they are acting up. I have had almost all of my balls go off-feed recently, until they were paired up. Now they are all eating again, and the females who are typically calm are being "women". It's happened same time of the year previously to me, it's happening now, and will most definitely happen in the future. Just because you don't attempt to artificially recreate a breeding season, snakes are smart enough to pick up on the cues around them. They're smart. They know it's time to get it on (assuming they area of breeding age) and want to rock the night away.... Good luck.
one of my males is off feed as usual at this time of year but other than that, even when hes fasting his behavior remains the exact same.

I've got a male doing the same thing, were on month 2 of his hunger strike. I'm assuming it has allot to do with the cues from nature. I don't provide and light in the room, I just let the sun dictate when it's day and when it's night as a result my ball has been on the cool side constantly, been off feed for 2 months, but still constantly cruising the tank, my assumption being looking for a mate, at all hours of the night. No hissing though, I'm going to change the lighting schedule, keep a light on 12 hours during the day and part of when it gets darker at night and then 12 off. I'll do this for a week and see if it changes his attitude toward eating.

We had BABY ball pythons last year, and right around this time of year, they had the exact symptoms you described above Nita - no feeding, more skittish (hell the male even nailed me full force one day), and tending toward the cooler end of the enclosure. By April, all was well.
Why exactly would baby ball pythons act that way?
I thought they only did that type of thing when they were matured. My juvenile male ball python has hissed a bit more often than normal... but his feeding is nowhere near a fast, at the moment, which I'm definitely not complaining about!
Im glad someone brought this up cuz I have noticed that my bp is staying at the cool end a lot more and slithering at night a lot less, even when I think the room is a little cooler than it should be....Thats normal this time of year? My snake is eating normally (piggy)...and I dont know if its a boy or girl, but if its a girl, could she start getting an attitude at 7 months old or is that a bit too young? So far so good, Ill watch for changes.

Sounds like a classic case of folicular development to me. Cool seeking, agression. I'd start putting your male in there now if I was you. If they are not introduced to a male they can reabsorb their follicles.

Mykee, what was the point of all that?

This part was especially nice.

sorry was just trying to help...
Well hopefully with Briseas it is follicular developement, she will be meeting up with Jamies het pied male in couple weeks. She did thankfully eat a rat last night, she is normally a fantastic eater and takes a 300 - 500g rat every 1 - 2 weeks. I offer every week she refused last week but took this week. I'm just not sure why Recoil is acting up unless he is just mad cause he figured out he isnt' going to be paired up with anyone this year!! LOL.
