I just bought a Retic from NERD and they sold it to me as a normal but after i bought it they said that none of there retics are normals and that she was probably a calico that isn't showing yet. Can anyone tell if this is true from a picture?
Thats a NICE retic... congrats!!! :)
Make sure to post pics of it eating rabbits in 7 to 8 months :)

LeoGeckoRetic

Yeah hopefully she stays tame i handle her every day and tap her on the head before i take her out to cancell out her feeding response and feed her in a seperate tank so hopefully its enough.

Sweeeeet lookin retic. I love the silvery sides. Yeah, im not to sure I would do the tapping on the head thing, you might get away with that now, but you will not wanna be doing that when she is 18 + ft. However, touching her somewhere on her body to associate handling should be fine. Also, you feed her in a seperate enclosure now, but where will you feed her when she is full grown and eating 10 lb rabbits, pigs, or goats etc.... ?? Also, I hope you have a spare bedroom for her to live in..hehe :D
LeoGeckoRetic
10-22-04, 10:42 PM
Yeah i have a room for her when she gets big and the tap on the head thing the guys at NERD told me to do and they do it themselves with all there snakes and i'm not sure about feeding in a separate tank but i do have a tank that is 6'x4'x4' so i could do it in there i think because the guy i got it from kept his retic in there.
I love it.. NICE silver sides!

By the looks...I dont think so. But who knows? I have not read up on the "Calico" Retic much.
I notice many people mentioning how hopefully it stays "tame." I have seen more "tame" retics than I have aggresive.
Awesome none the less.
I have on hold, 1.1 Ambon Yellow Head Retics. I will be sending the money out in 2 weeks when they're ready, then they will be here in about 3 or less. I'm so excited! I have a 4x2x2 split in two right now (2x2x2 for each.) And while they are in there I will be working on two 6x2x1.
If you want some pics LeoGecko let me know! I sure would love more pics of your Retic!
Here are some pics of CALICO'S (http://www.newenglandreptile.com/retic_calico.html) . I noticed on there a couple pics that kind of resemble the ones you have posted of your retic..

The head tapping is a great "tool" to get used to doing. I keep anacondas, retics, burmese, etc., and they all get a head tap to wake them up, them a few gentle strokes on their body before I handle them. Use a snake hook for the contact, not your hand of course. Start them off like this when they are young and it will get ingrained in them. I have no problem with any of my snakes, and some of them are 12 to 14 feet long. Keep 'tapping', Ron.

yeah that makes sense..using a snake hook. I was assuming he would be reaching his hand in and tapping the head of a 16 ft retic one day...YIKES.
LeoGeckoRetic
11-10-04, 03:25 PM
No i ment with the snake pole not my hand. Yeah your hand would be real dumb to try it with. LOL

Thanks, that answers the question kind of i guess. There is one picture on that page that looks almost idenical to her. And it says that there has never been one captured in the wild under 8 ft. So i guess i have to wait a while longer to know for sure. Thanks again

The second and the sixth picture kind of look like normals so yours could be a calico.
Thats a great feeding pic!
Hey i was just thinking ?how much would it be for a 10 lb rabbits?? lol thanks
LeoGeckoRetic
01-30-05, 06:17 PM
Not sure how much they are but I'm hoping not terribly expensive. And its been about three months since i took those pictures and she seems to be getting more white scales on her side and she is a little bigger then six feet now. I'll post more pictures in another month or two I want to be able to post a dramatic change.

I can't wait to see what she's going to look like when she's around 12 foot because i read that there has never been a wild calico retic found under 8 feet. so when she gets bigger hopefully her color will get even better
C.ADAMANTEUS
02-01-05, 07:38 PM
Been my experience that ALL retics are huge:)
Ive only ever had 3 or 4 in my care, the largest right at 12 ft.
My experiences with them as a rehaber have caused me a lack of trust in that species. Been bit 6 or 7 times by retics. Im trying to help, they dont always know that.:D
But your is a beaut.

02-01-05, 07:41 PM
Is it true that they can be very tame when small but as the get bigger the get more skittish they get and tend to bite more. Because i've had her for like three months and she hasn't bit me or even tried as long as wasn't feeding her
C.ADAMANTEUS
02-01-05, 07:54 PM
Ive known people to own large ones with no problems in attitude at all.
Others display agression at times for various reasons. I dont know that age has anything to do with it or not:confused:
I do know that you should always use caution with it, especially when it gets older, but thats true with all the giants.LOL
LeoGeckoRetic
02-01-05, 08:08 PM
Yeah, people have told me about the getting mean when there big but a friend of mine has 2 that are five years old and 12 feet and they are really tame. do you have any pictures of yours

feeding response may become greater but I donts ee why a reptile would become agressive when it gets larger.
Maybe it just knows it's getting bigger and can throw his/hers weight around?

Dont have any pics of the retics. havent had one in yrs.

so how are you attaching these pics? Cant get more than 5 in my gallery.
this is turnd a far different path than giant pythons LOL
LeoGeckoRetic
02-01-05, 09:15 PM
He's a green basilisk the guy I got him from didn't have a heat lamp on him and the think kept him too wet so some of his toes are really messed up and he has mouth rot, but he's doing better
C.ADAMANTEUS
02-01-05, 09:23 PM
looks like a neat critter. where they come from?
What are you treating it with for the rot?
LeoGeckoRetic
02-01-05, 09:29 PM
I'm posting the pics by going to that attach picture thing and clicking browse but i have to crop the pictures for them to fit. I'm not sure what the stuff i'm using for the mouth rot is my friend gave it to me he used it on some water dragons but the lable is ripped off. and yeah this is way off the topic of big snakes. Heres a picture of the savannah i rescued the guy was going to kill him if i didn't take him
LeoGeckoRetic
02-01-05, 09:32 PM
Oh yeah and they're from costa rica and its cool cause they can run on water
C.ADAMANTEUS
02-01-05, 09:37 PM
Thats a real bummer. Thats the very reason Im so active and vocal about people (unqualified) owning monsters ie burms, retics, rocks, and a number of lrge lizards.
the pet store guy doesnt know what hes saying half the time, the people realize the monster they've grown, and want to KILL the damn thing.
They should just remain in the WILD
Sorry but im really pasionate about that s$$t.

oh yeah, you should really get something from a vet that you KNOW what it is, and you KNOW isnt outdated. some chemical properties change with age. Better safe than sorry.

02-01-05, 09:46 PM
Do you know the name of anything that works for mouth rot the stuff i've been using and getting him at a warmer temp and not as much moisture his mouth is really looking a lot better and yeah the guy i got the monitor from was feeding him only mice and savannahs never eat any vertabrate animals in the wild only a variaty of bugs thats why most only live a couple of years because they die of obeciety and this guy was pretty fat when i got him.
C.ADAMANTEUS
02-01-05, 09:57 PM
from what i understand insects are there primary diet with occasional small rodents, eggs, ground chicks. they are hunters, and will switch to feed mode upon movement in the wild.
moisture control and correct temp will help, dusting crickets with calcium before feeding may contribute, other than that, I only know of controled subs, witch means see a vet:) they will prescribe.
LeoGeckoRetic
02-01-05, 10:02 PM
yeah, i've been giving him calcium with his meal worms because thats all he'll eat.

Someone posted a pic of a kid taking a bath with a retic. I think that photo is not real. The snake's tail is behind the bucket, where it should be a dark spot, but it's showing so bright.

Hey Jimmy David, I found that pic surfing for stuff in thailand.
The lil thread that was with it was talking how the locals adapt to having such large snake inhabit there homes, outhouses, everything. Cant find the site again though.
Cant say if its a real Retic or not cuz I only copied it. I thought the tail looked to get skinny very very soon, but just thought it was the cam angle. The colors I liked. thats why I copied it.
You say fake huh?
