Now that everyone has likely sold all their 2004 hatchlings and the weather is turning colder (we still have at least a foot of snow outside my window since the snowfall last weekend!!) - our thoughts turn to brumation and planning breedings for next year -

Anyone willing to share their plans for corn breedings next year - any exciting new projects underway??

I have many youngsters to grow up next year and will be doing only a couple corn clutches - a butter female to an amel (sunglow) motley male - to set up for motley butters, as well as incorporate into the striped creamsicle project.

The butter female

The sunglow motley male - he is a youngster but will be 2 years old in the spring and I expect he will be up to the task. If not, the striped male will take over.

Second corn breeding is an amel (almost reverse okeetee) female

to our light creamsicle male
http://www.ssnakess.com/photopost/data/509/6304_Jan_2_Nibblet_2_reduced.jpg

Tried this one last year but bred her to two males and it appears the striped male fathered the clutch. The cream boy will get a chance to go it alone this year.

Have also been thinking of suggesting that a friend breed one of our ghost males
http://www.ssnakess.com/photopost/data/509/6304_May_23_Spectre_39_reduced.jpg

to the great plains ratsnake female
http://www.ssnakess.com/photopost/data/509/63Crockett_b_reduced.jpg
to work toward 'cinnamon' corns - the hypo version of creamsicles.

Quite a limited plan for next year but have to keep things under control!!

Anyone else willing to share their plans??

Well, as it stands right now, here's what we have on the list for breeding:

BOIDS

- Colombian Boas
- Suriname Boas
- Childrens Pythons
- Spotted Pythons

COLUBRIDS

- Tangerine honduran milks
- Sinaloan milks
- corns (2 clutches, maybe more)

On the HUGE maybe list is:

- F1 jungle corn project. If that female doesn't take, we may just do cal kings.
- Water pythons - heavily contingent on the female, who is currently on a hunger strike. If we can get her to breeding size over the winter, we may try them in the spring.

Our plans for 06 are of course, exponentially bigger. :D

Top Secret

As much as I love fantasizing about what I will breed, I'm really paranoid and suspicious of saying anything. I was all excited about my blue beauties and russian rats and what happens? Collapsed eggs. This year I just won't say anything.

Lots of diversity - got to love all the potential out there! I keep planning one thing and than changing my mind. Put the breeding of my striped male corn (believe he is het for snow) together with my hypo snows this afternoon and can hardly wait for 2006 - tons of diversity in one clutch and the next generation will be a blast - so much potential!

WYZ - love that pink snow - must be hypo!! She is gorgeous.

Walter - is there a really long waiting list for those cornballs - seems you didn't have enough to go around last year LOL!!

Katt - I am really hoping once we are in Sask you consider at least trying that blizzard female of yours with our male - even though he is pretty yellow - would be neat to have some blizzard corn babies produced around here! I am totally without superstitition about sharing breeding plans - the snakes always conspire to change everything at the last minute anyway!

Still single so 2005 breeding plans are still in the works LOL Oh you meant snakes. I know that there is a pretty good chance of some Blizzards in SK now that there is an adult male on route (yer welcome Katt) & also Mary, Walter has a single female that needs a BF too. Me I'll have lots on the go. Hopefully (touches wood) I'll see: Womas (1rst), JCPs (1rst - that'd be Sydney there MV), Childrens, Eastern Indigos (at Kyle's), LTRs, VBBs, Speckled Hognoses (1rst), lots of various Corns & CKs, Graybands (blairs) & Mtn. Kings (knoblochi). Seeings how we should be talking Corns here I'll go in to it a bit. Regs, Amels, Anerys & Snows all in Motley & Striped as well plus Ghosts & Hypos. Then there are the Jungle Corns (1/2 CK & 1/2 Corn) I'll have lots of Hets & Albinos that will be F2s & F3s & may "create" some heavily crossbred ones too, we'll see how big my one "mutt" male is come spring. I'm looking more forward to Burmation at this point LOL My snake room looks deserted already, wait until all the adult Colubrids are downstairs & it will seem barren. It will give me a chance to move/make some enclosures & do a thorough cleaning. Plus I'll have more time to focus on holdbacks & more importantly Pythons! Mark

LMAO!!! Hey, better than actually being able to get babies out and not get one out of 3 clutches eating on their own yet. :p Telling ya man, house snakes are not easy! It's a LIE!

Thanks Van!! I appreciate your cander! Yeah, these things have me stumped, and well, I've bred a few snakes in my day. But maybe I need more experience!
I think I'll be ready for D'alberts again, or maybe Boeleni ,or hell, maybe I'll just breed sea snakes, once I figure out house snakes. LOL

Nothing much eggciting going on around here this spring. Some hondos and pueblans and maybe i'll experiment with these corns.
My goal for the upcoming breeding season to get ready for the 06 breeding season. Most of my milks are another season away but theres enough females laying around that i am already preparing.

Vanan and Stockwell:
I am fairly certain you could get your house snakes to feed on anoles. A friend goes through the anoles like candy at this time of year on his house snakes.
Can you get any up there??
:Mark

Stockwell

thanks Mark, no native anoles up here. We could get them from the pet trade but the wholesale price on anoles is about the same as House snakes, so not much of an economical meal, although snagging one simply for scenting could be done. I've done that for Baby Haitian boas , and got a whole year out of one frozen anole.
Plus its only Vanan that has actually produced house snakes. I have two pair, and haven't even seen slugs out of them and they're at least 3 years old.

Vanan

I would buy an anole just for scenting. Now to locate a petstore with one, within an hour and a half radius. :p But thanks for the tip Mark. Was always wondering if that would do it. Needed to hear it from someone else.

Mary,

Your butter female is a beauty! I love how light she is... my pair both have more oranges on them.

Next year everyone (except my amel stripe) will be old enough and should be big enough to breed (finally!).... so I hope to have butters, lavenders, and amels het for blizzard. Fingers crossed that everyone will be ready and raring to go without brumating.

Thanks Dawn - I really like this butter female - bred by Annette from Wrapped up in Reptiles. Best of luck with the breedings you have planned - will be great to see some lavender corns in Alberta - seem to be lots of people wanting them!

Paulsreef,
We have been breeding our female corns at 3 years of age but did use a 2 year old male last year and he was successful.

Speaking of Cinnamons, I have many animals that are: het for cinnamon, some that are cinnamon, and, my favorite, Striped Cinnamon. I got them all from the guy who made the first Cinnamon, Steve Roylance or roylancereptiles (roylancereptiles.com).

No they are all either yearlings or hatchlings. I got them from a good friend of mine, Steve Roylance of roylancereptiles.com, who started the project before anyone else. I will get you some pics of them.

Hopefully next season i won't mistake ovulation for being gravid lol.

So hopefully next year my corns will produce for me.

Along with that i'm hoping more beardie babys and in 2006 some crested geckos, and who knows what else i will be attempting depends on new members added to my collection before then.
