corn snakes and king snakes are the best for beginners but if you are willing to learn as much as you can about ball pythons they are great to have (get one that is a bit older and feeding for sure) or if you want something a bit bigger look into a male colombian red tail boa (they are my favorite snakes in the world and sooo easy to care for but females can get BIG)
If you are looking for a boid, you could get a ball python, a hog island boa, a Kenyan sand boa, a rosy boa or a Children's python. I recommend taking a look at as many differrent species as you can and narrow it down from there.

my first was a royal (ball) python. They are usually very mild tempered and relatively small. Boa constrictors get big. If your not ready for something that could reach 7 feet with a lot of bulk the royals probably your best choice

A ball python will not top 5' in fact I would say your safe too say it wont get over 4', It is Boas that will get up around 7', And don’t let anyone tell you your safe with a male boa My male boa is 7'.
