If you had only $400 to spend....

Which digital camera would you get?? I want to get one really bad so I can show off my herps to you, and take pics of my gf, friends etc. Can $400 even get me a decent digital camera for herp photos? Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Click on my user name and search some of my old posts, all of those pictures were taken with a Canon A70. You can purchase the newer A75 (same features essentially) for $299. I wouldn't recommend anything else....

A less expensive Canon or Nikon camera in my opinion would be your best bet. $400.00 now days can get you a fairly decent camera

Be aware that it is anywhere from $60-120 for extra memory. A lot of cameras only come with like 16 Mb, so you are gonna wanna purchase the extra megs.
Another thing to consider is the price of the batteries. A good set of the Nickel Cadnium batteries can run you $40.
So a $400 camera can easily become $550 before you even leave the store.

I picked up a Kodak DX6340 for my girlfriend, and after comparing it to the Powershot A70s color and clarity, I regret not buying the Powershot instead. Not only was it cheaper, it takes a hell of a lot better pics.

You'll want Nickel MetalHydride batteries, not Nickel Cadmium (those are the old standard of rechargeables). Anything around 1950 mAH or greater are good. I have the panasonic 1950 mAH batteries and quick charger, I think it's around $50 these days. Great batteries for my Canon A70, they last a long time...

You also got to set aside at least $50 or so to get a memory card. The free cards that come with the camera are usually too small to be practical.

$400 can definitely get you a decent Canon or Nikon digital camera. Canon's entry level A series is good value for money in my opinion.

You can get a really nice point a shoot digital for around $400 but like the others said, it's the extra "necessities" that will put you over budget.

I have a Canon A70. It's a pretty good little unit. No regrats so far. I just wish I could have afforded another $1000 or so at the time. Get myself a nice digital SLR... :D
