big repti-glos 5.0 with a good basking light........or a 175-200 watt metal halide(mecury).

and actually for a whole room use repti-glo 8.0 if your gona go that way cause they shoud by rights be at 18 - 24 inches from your reptile and it can prove to be hard to that with and iguana in his own room..........i use metal halide cause it provides UVB/A and lots of heat for basking (actually heats the room)

I don't know much about iguanas, but if you have designated a room for himyhou'd benefit from taking the blinds off of the windows so he could get some natural sunlight. Also if flooding the room with uvb bulbs is your goal you can get very large fixtures at canadian tire for cheap. Go to a garden gallery and buy some grow lights I'm sure they'd be cheaper then the repti glos and will last longer. I'd use the mercury vapour as a basking light to it also provides lots of uv. post some pics of your igunana room we it's finished. Goodluck!

UVB does not pass thru glass, so sunlight is only good for uvb if it's direct (ie. not thru the window). Also, it'd be best to thoroughly research any grow bulb you might find, as most are just bright lights, and do NOT emit any uvb. You can actually buy a uv tester that you can measure the amount of uv coming from your bulbs, which is a good idea if you're really concerned about it. Then you can see for yourself which bulb really works best.

Metal Halide(MH, Mercury Vapor) is the best artificial UVB source. High Pressure Sodium(HPS)is also good source and produces 20% more orange and red light but MH produces more UVB. In growing for example MH would help replicate spring lighting and trigger diff cycles such as a veg cycle then HPS would help replicate jully - sept lighting and trigger flower and fruiting cycles. Any grow light from crappy tire will never produce enough UVB.

uv rays can pass through glass

Glass passes only a very small percentage of UVB. That's why you dont get a sunburn through a window.
