I was just wondering if compost is a suitable substrate for snakes. I think it would be nice but im kinda worried about the little mites and buggs walking around. Does anyone know how to steralize it?

It's actually better if you don't sterilize it. If you do, it will rot or collect molds.
Grab a copy of the book "The Art of Keeping Snakes" and read up on how to create a biologically sound vivarium. I'm going that way myself :)

I wouldn't bother. Why use rotting materials when you could just use aspen chips, bark mulch, paper towels, newspaper or ANY other commonly used substrate.
My advice to you is to stop trying to think out of the box until you have a good grasp on what's IN the box. Just get the basics covered as easily as possible and then you can move on to some of your more "unique" ideas.
