old tv

I was thinking the other day about building a reptile enclosure out of one of those old style televisions(The really big ones with the wood around them), by removing all the electronics but leaving the front of the television the same. Would this be feasible, has anyone else ever done it?

Ive seen someone turn a tv into an aquarium. It was freakin awesome but he said it took him a crap load of time and tons of modifications.

Yours wouldnt have to be water proof so it could work.

I built one quite a few years ago and they look neat sitting in the living room. The electronics aren't as bad as the screen itself. There was a little metal band around the back, I hit the band pulling it out and the whole thing imploded. There was a piece of glass about an inch thick stuck in the wall of my house. Once all the peices are out you have apretty nice starting point to build from.

I would say it is worth a try, I build a cage out of an old dresser once. It looked pretty cool too.

Well, just as a bit of a side note, my brother once built a rat's cage from one of the old console tvs. He gutted it, replaced the glass, and wired the back for ventilation. The rat, Rizzo, lived in there until he died of old age.

I'm pretty sure the front glass is part of the entire CRT so I don't think you can leave just the glass. Unless I misunderstood what you meant by "front of the televison" ...

Teh glass in teh frot of the telelvision is heavily leadaed to protect you rom the radiaiton from the cathode ray tube. I would look for another piece of glass rahter than the original screen. Lead is never good.

WOOO!!! I got a big nice old tv yesterday night from a thrift store here. It said KAPUT on the screen, so I asked how much, and she said TAKE IT FOR FREE BABY! Well, she didn't say the BABY part, but that's what I think she meant.

I'm going to remove all the crap inside today, then next step is plexiglass on front and THEN that polywhatever stuff you get as a foam and then basically explode it all over the inside and shape it to whatever you like.

First question: what is this polywhatever stuff? What brand do I get?

I'll take pics along the way. I don't know how I'm going to get lighting in there yet....

double J, why would the lead inside of the glass affect a reptile, unless it ate the glass of course?

I picked up 2 today. I will be converting one for my BP and the other I am not sure yet. I will need to fill it for Christmas. A present for me!!

Just a bit of advice for you Brock. If you have not removed the Crap from inside. It is a good idea to do it out side, not in your house.

You would Have to remove the Picture tubes glass, ect. Most old TVs arnt flat screen so It wouldnt have an "authentic" look when you replace the screen with lexan or glass, but I dont think It would be a Ton of work, and It would be cool. But It would also be heavy.

VERY heavy. I got the guts out of it, now I just have the frame. I'm going to leave it until February though when I get back from Australia, maybe I'll come back with some awesome ideas.
