I do not yet have a lizard, but I joined this forum because I am interested in getting one and don't know what to get (I like to do extensive research on any pet before getting it). I own two frogs, one frog-to-be, and more fish than I can count. However, I am, as I said, completely new to lizards. SO, I'm looking for a lizard that is fairly easy (and relatively cheap) to care for and can live in a 40 gal. long glass terrarium; I would also like something I can tame/hold. I love my pets; I don't want to end up with something I can't take care of.
Does anybody have any ideas?
How about a uromastyx, bearded dragon or blue tongue skink?

Those are great lizards ( owned 2 but not the BTS) but they cost a bit and I wouldn't say are for beginners. I'd say get some leos for your first lizard. Or my fav a crested gecko. Leopard geckos would do better in the tank you have.

African fat-tails are great geckos, very calm right out of the egg. They come in different patterns/colour morphs, and a price range from very inexpensive to unbelievable (but worth every penny). Leos are great beginner geckos too. If you'd rather an arboreal, wall and glass climbing gecko, then crested geckos (Rhacodactylus ciliatus) and gargoyles (R. auriculatus) would be good choices. Both can be handled, but not quite as much as a leo, fattie, bearded dragon or a few others.

Recommended Species of Blue Tongue Skinks: Northerns, Irian Jaya's, Indonesians are very easy to keep if they are cbb.
Size of cage: 30-50 gallons
Diet: Veggies, fruit, insects and canned cat food.
Water and Humidity: a shallow dish of water to soak and drink from, and humidity around 30-40%.

Where are you located? If you choose bts I know a place that sells them for really cheap and the shipping is 15 bucks(usa). BTS are great, it's really neat how they give birth to live young.
