View Full Version : Sexing
Okay I know sexing is tough when it comes to cresties. One of our juveniles is still fairly young but has developed a buldge. This buldge looks to be a female buldge. My question is after they show some kind of buldge can you sex them? Or can the crestie's buldge still get bigger and look more like a male buldge? I've seen pictures and females have a much smaller buldge which tapers to the tail. This is what our crestie's looks like. But just wondering if males go throught this stage as well or does it drop its hemipenes all at once? Thanks.
Mike
So people are breeding these but have no idea how to answer my question? I'm confused...

I would say that any developing buldge would be a male, thats what I have experienced with my cresties anyway. Can you post a pic of the crestie in question to get a better idea.
We'll try to post a picture soon. Neither of us have a digital camera, so we'll have to do it the old fashioned way.

Sorry, I've only had my cresties for under a month, so I've not much experience with sexing them yet...

If there's a bulge, then I'm inclined to say male. Females don't really have a bulge, or nothing you would normally describe as one. The area behind the vent tapers towards the tail. Some have a much longer taper, in some it's shorter making more of a bend towards the tail than a smooth progression, but it's not anything close to what males have. If the tail has been dropped, it could give the illusion of a bulge. Since there's no tail to taper off to, the body comes to a fairly sudden stop.
Yours is a juvenile with a fairly developed bulge, so my first guess is male.
Without a picture, no specific age info, it's impossible to be sure, sorry.
Thanks dragon. I am thinking it's a male. Now we have to decide which male we have that we want to try to sell. We would like to start a breeding colony, but if we can't get rid of one we will definately provide it with proper husbandry. Thanks everyone.

Why not buy 4-6 more unsexed and then see which ones turn female and then you could set up a couple colonies! <Evil Grin> Isn't that what a true herper would do? ;)

lol thats what I have done!!
Lol I can't.....damn wish I could. I'm running outta room in my bedroom. I have a 8 by 10 bedroom with a bed, computer desk, two night tables, a dresser and 4 snakes, 4 geckos and a tarantula scattered everywhere...it's getting kinda crazy
Mike
Yeah, I can vouch for that. His collection is moving him out of house and home. We would love to invest in more, but it's just not possible at the time. Thanks so much Dragon for your advice. We are pretty sure it's a male, so we separated our two juvies today...so sad. To keep the dalmation, or the fire...that is the question...

Oh, I have good news for you. Furniture is highly overrated.
Move your bed to the middle of the room, gives you more wall space for cages and tanks. Cresties are reasonably small and light weight, you can use plastic/acrylic tanks for them, suspended from the ceiling by a pulley system. If possible, get bunk beds, use the bottom one for you, put plywood on the top frame and use it as a stand for more tanks and cages.
Need more suggestions?

And besides...
With enough geckos you'll spend so much time feeding and watching them every night you won't even think of sleeping!! ;) :p
Haha, I like how you guys think, expecially you DragnDrop....I can see it now! My bed would be my floor and everything else around it haha. That would be awesome actually. I'll keep that in mind when i do run outta room. My computer desk is huge.

Buh! Don't give him any ideas! Haha, I can see it now, his room worked with pulleys, and tanks, not only on the floor and furniture, but suspended from the ceiling. Oh boy!
