View Full Version : GTP Concern

Lately, my GTP has been spending a lot of time on the floor of his enclosure. I have a somewhat naturalistic terrarium set up for him with fake plants, black melamine, etc. I use peat moss on the floor of the enclosure. Lately I've been finding him curled up on the ground about 50% of the time. Is this something I should be concerned about?

From everything I have read, especially from the members on Greg Maxwells site...if your husbandry has no faults, humidity, heating etc are in check and o.k. then it's perfectly natural for some GTP's to be on ground level for some of their time. Some do it more often, while most of them don't.

If he is a new snake to your household, it might make me wonder what other issues might be going on. But if everything is ruled out, then that's where he is choosing to be. That's my take on the GTP on the ground situation.

I wouldn't sweat it as long as you've got the proper setup...

How big is the enclosure and how is it in comparison to the previous enclosure?

Yeah, if maintenance or stress from the outside are not a problem, then i guess it's not so bad... My ETB has surprised me doing so too... I surprised him a couple times in a month exploring on the ground level but it really seems to be doing fine...

He is in a 2 x 2 x 2 enclosure essentially. He was at the last TARAS show on display, so that may be it. But, he has temps ranging from 77 at night to about 88 during the day, 88-95% humidity, and his enclosure is about the same size as his previous one.

I have seen a chondro go as far as to dig through substrate during a night time hunt. That chondro ate well and was well hydrated, so no further concern was given to it.

They do perch beautifully, so I would say enjoy that 50% it's in the top of the cage. As long as it's still eating well, well hydrated, and doesn't seem too streesed, I wouldn't worry any further.

Enjoy

Check out the pic at the bottom of this link. Non perching chondros aren't necessarily unhealthy chondros.
