tank size

i want to put my 3 turtles together, i have a male red belly, and 2 red eared sliders (i'm pretty sure the one is male) i might be geting a diamond back terrapin soon as well. would a 125 gallon be good or should i get a 150?

Hi, you should be very careful when introducing turtles too live together, especially if males are involved or you may end up with a very injured turtle. as for size the bigger the better I don't know what the "standard" is. As for a diamond back I caught the impression you were putting it in with the other 3, the red belly, and RES are both "sliders" but a terrapin is a different type of turtle, they come form completely different habitats , and I don’t believe they are naturally as communal as slider species are. So if it were me I would not house it in with the others.

well if the terrapin shouldn't go with the sliders than i simply wont get it (i just know some one who may be getting rid of theirs but i never said i'd take it) i was also considering giving the red ears back to my mom who i got them from, but i might keep them.

i have been changing my mind all around about my turts. so who knows what i'll do =)

again, please read what i mentioned about tank size, having now three turtles in a 125 gallon tank is soo laughable, go read up on basic turtle care before you start posting again so you don't sound like such an idiot!

A good general rule is 10 gallons of water for every inch of turtle (TCL), and 2x the filtration recommendation (ie. if a filter is good for a fifty gallons of fish, its good for 25 gallons of turtle water). Those RES are gonna get big, and if you have female's you wouldn't want to keep any more than one in a 125. The terrapin wouldn't be a good idea. They have different requirements.

Not everyone one can know everything. How does saying this help? Everyone and one point or another needs infromation.


Anyways I have seen large sliders in a 130 gal, it is really sad. There is not as much room as you would think because they are only 2 ft wide. Have you thought about an indoor pond? They can look quite nice if done right. Just remember to use a de-humidifier.

thanks every one else for the advise. i thought something really big would be better for my turtles because the 2 males will do mating things to each other and then turn around and get mad at each other (which is why i may not even put them together).

i think i'm going to keep them in what they are in now and keep looking at tanks (at our store we have tanks in every length, width, hight, shape and so on).

How about a custom made tank? The problem with most fish tanks is they are not very wide. Even a 250 gal is only 2 ft wide. To fit through most door jams. ;) Good luck.

Yes Michele, I would go with an outdoor pond. That could look pretty nice if done right. Also, I would ignore anything Turtle crazy says, as I have seen her on the TARAS website and acts like she knows everything about turtles. I don't know how she was trying to help you out by posting that. 125 gallons could be really big for your RES for a temporary home if they are on the smaller end. Either way she seems to know how to tell people what they are doing wrong with turtles.

t and j- i did think about that before or even just a big square tank but i'm starting to go towards keeping them seperate because of their totaly different personalities and i really dont want the males fighting.

how about a rubbermaid you can get a 380 gallon for about £80 cheap as chips realy thats what im goin to do wen my 2 yellow bellied slider's get to big for there 5ft fish tank thank god they dont get as res. 10 gallon to every inch of turt then anothe 15 gallon for basking area unless you get a floating island made out of cork. hope this helps. mark

man Im having the same problem with my RES Im thinking now ill prolly make an indoor pond for them what sort a filter would you suggest if I got a 300 gal tub and also how would I go about heating the sucker

dont know about filtering but if theres any places near you that has horse supplies you can get a cheap horse trough (sp) heater. people use them in their fish ponds for winter, i'm sure it would work for turtles.

I bought a 300 Gallon Hourse trough for $180 at Co-op. I went with the poly one instead of galvanized. It's setup in the basement for rescues and such. My recent female RES I found living in a 20 gallon (SHE'S 10" LONG!!!) is wading up a storm in there. They work awsome!! 2 Filstar 3's and a plexiglass fence. And a big flat rock sloped in the middle under the Reptisuns and basking lamps. Not real "showy" but functional.
