I just got my first corn at the last red deer show and "he" is doing great. He eats everytime I offer and sheds perfect, I just have a question about temps. My reptile room Is about 79-82 in the day and drops to around 74-76 at night. My question is I currently have a 50 watt bulb giving him a warm spot to bask around 89, Is this neccesary or Is the temps in my room fine? Thanx for the help./

The temps in your room will suffice. My snake sheds' temp is anywhere from 80°F to 85°F during the day. At night it drops into lower 70°'s F.

We find that very few of our corns 'bask' even though we provide overhead lights to give spot heat to those of ours in aquariums. Most of ours are napping during the day when the lights are on (the red bulbs to provide overnight heat are just too expensive and blow far too often - the snakes just get room temperature at night).

That being said, we do have some individuals that really seem to enjoy coming out and 'sunning' themselves - especially for a couple days after feeding. If you see your corn using the spot (they will sometimes stay under the shavings) it lets you know he wants or needs that extra heat and it would be a good idea to keep it.

It is also important to consider that the room temp likley varies a lot depending on where in the room the snake tank is - there can be a 7-10 degree difference in temp in the floor of a tank depending on whether it is near the floor or on a high shelf - so make sure you know the actual temps in your snakes cage range into the mid 80's for part of the day to give him the temps he needs to digest.

Good luck with him - post some pics if you can,

Ditto to what mary said lol Even though my room is always hot the cages near the floor always have UTH's on because in my house there are drafts so better safe then sorry!

I have many snakes in a warm room that is 80-85 during the day and 75-77 at night. I put corns in there, because I've found that not one of the corns I have use their hot spot if I give them a gradient around 88 or 89. They just seem to prefer constant warm temps.

I have a temp gun, so I have a really good Idea of the temps. Its olny a 50 watt bulb so Its not like It costs much to have on, I was more wondering about nightime because the red light bothers me sometimes, So to conclude I have decided to give him the basking spot during the day, but room temp (75) at night. Thanks for your advice, and Mary I will get some pics up as soon as he sheds :)
