View Full Version : Not a Corn

Nope, not a corn at all but I think of him as one of the corns.

I'm hoping to convince him that he's a corn in the spring but he wasn't buying into it last time around. I would like to eventually get him a nice Great Plains Rat girl to make up for any genetic meddling I impose on him in the mean time. Creams are wicked but these guys have a subtle, distinct beauty to them.

He's easily the least secretive snake I've ever known but when you put him down on the floor he seems to have a lot of things to do.

My camera doesn't deal with objects that are in constant motion very well so I grabbed the hide, which he nearly never uses, out of his cage. I love the markings on top of his head.

These guys aren't loud, bright and shiny like corns but to say they lack colour would only show that not enough time has been taken to appreciate them. Toward the ventral scales this guy has oranges and pinks that I cannot describe and the snake's unwillingness to pose for pics on his back prevents me from photographing.

Hope you like him.

Is it an eastern milk of a great plains rat?
sure looks like a corn though doesn't it?
Cheers,
Trevor

He's a Great Plains Rat, I guess I failed to make that clear in all my rambling but yeah, he sure looks a lot like a corn, other than being 2 - 3 times thicker than any corn I've seen other than maybe that giant freak of a corn that Invictus has.

I meant to ask too, does this guy look overweight to anyone? He not only fails the Roy-Stockwell-Fat-Snake-Test, but seems quite willing to wiggle free and fall to the floor instead of climbing back up his own body. lol!

Whats the Roy-Stockwell-Fat-Snake-Test?

How does it work..

Basically you hold the snake up in the air by his tail and see if he can do a snake chin-up or if he just dangles there helplessly.

This guy has been on a weight loss program this year, lost at least 200 grams and STILL fails the test. lol!

Fantastic looking GPRatsnake - he is great. I really like them on their own, but have to admit that in combo with corns is where they stand out for me right now - love the creamsicles!!

I can hardly wait til Simon is producing the albino GPRats though - some photos I have seen of the adults are fantastic.

thanks for sharing the pics - glad to hear he is losing some weight - they really feed like crazy - the female we bred was not that heavy but she sure could pack away the rats.

Found a 6' bull near the densites which failed it too. Damn thing hung so loose I thought it was dead. He had so much fat reserves I'm sure he would be ready for a few Saskatchewan winters.

Real nice looking GPR btw. I do have a soft spot for them too. Another non-flashy, subtley beautiful snake.

Mary,
You're quite right about the appetite these buggers have, it easily matches any king snake I would say. This guy will be out on the hunt usually 3 days after being fed, of course he craps the day before that so I guess things are happening pretty fast. lol!

The albino GPRs are definitely high on my list of snakes I must have... actually I really only need a single female, but I checked with Simon and he didn't care that it was my birthday and refused to surrender one for free. Can you believe that? lol!

Vanan,

I think my GPR may survive a Saskatchewan winter but personally I'm too skinny, that's why I had to move away from there. Here in southern Ontario it gets a little chilly and wet for a few weeks and they call it winter, of course summer's not much different so I'm not sure how it works exactly. I grew up associating winter with, well snow for starters, and parking lots full of running cars with no one inside them, their owners deeming the risk of theft to be outweighed by the risk of the the car not starting again should they turn it off. lol! Too damn cold for me, I don't even like leaving the comfortable temps of the snake room.

LOL! My childhood "winters" consisted of monsoon rains and umbrella season.

BTW, tell Simon that's not very nice of him. Don't forget to also mention that my b'day will be here in approx 7 mths. Should be enough time for him to get things together. :D
