I think it is, to an extent. I grew up in a single parent house hold until I was out on my own (then my mother remarried). We moved around a LOT, like once or twice a year :rolleyes: I am married but don't have kids, but do have plenty of animals.
Not sure why it's like that, but maybe the nuclear family is just a myth? There are many types of families nowadays, and they all seem to work one way or another :p

I don't think it's so much disappearing (I seem to have one, scratch the fence and with a kitty instead of a dog) as it is that alternate family situations (mixed families [families with step-parents and/or step-kids], single parents, gay couples as parents, etc) are becoming much more common and socially accepted, which they certainly wouldn't have been only 30, 20, or maybe even 10 years ago.
I think that when the 'ideal nuclear family' portrait was painted it was in an era when it was important for husbands and wives to stay together for 'the sake of the children'. Now that women are more independant, and divorce has increased significantly over the last few decades, that yes, it is disappearing.
Now look at 'modern nuclear families';
With Homosexual persons starting families, there almost certainly are many two-parent households raising children. The only difference being, of course, both parents are of the same gender.
Single mothers.
Single fathers.
No-Children Households.
Children Being raised by relatives, as opposed to being raised by parents.
These are just a few examples of "Modern Nuclear Families".
I have to get back to work... I'll post more on this soon...

Why are they called nuclear families?

The 'nuclear' in nuclear family, refers to nuclear bonds (as in Physics) and nuclear bond is incredably stable.
I don't think that the 'traditional' nuclear family is being fased out, but I do think that now that ideals and opinions are changing, that other types of families and households can also be considered as nuclear. It is also more relevant now, that even the so called 'traditional' family, is not neccissarily nuclear.

When I first read "nuclear family", I was thinking of some mutated ratkids living in Chernobyl.
I can tell you my opinion on your "nuclear" family project. As people are becoming more independent, not afraid of being shunned by society...society of course doesnt care as much any more....there is no reason to stick around in an unsuitable environment. A lot of women stayed in abusive marriages, because it was the thing to do. Divorces weren't really ok. I dont believe a child has to have both parents around in order to do very well in life. The parent figures of course, do have to provide stability, and make the child feel he has a place in life.
I could probably bore you for awhile with my opinion on it, that is just a bit of how I feel it is.

Nuclear family refers to the centralization of the family, in the home, with parts that roam about but always come back. The two gendered parents for a firm bond that keeps the "molecule" stable. Children, pets, etc are like the atoms that spin around the firm center. This is if my memory serves me well, it has been a number of years.
