Hi all,

I am new to this forum and it looks to be very useful. I am in the process of building an enclosure for my two BCIs. They are still young and small and I am keeping them in a 10 gallon tank right now but I am planning on building something larger.

The new enclosure will be wood with glass front and I would like to use some form of epoxy to seal the inside. I have seen that some of you use a variety of products, but what I haven't seen is where you actually get the product and how much it costs.

So could some of you tell me which products you use and where you get them and if you can remember, how much you paid for it.

Thanks,

Atlas.

I use Epoxal 3:1 available from Niagara Protective Coatings in Niagara Falls. I think I paid about $65/gallon. I only used 3/4 gallon to seal the interior and exterior of 6 large cages (four 4'x2'x1', one 4'x2'x1.5', one 3'x2'x1').

Are NPC products available at any retail locations?

Thanks

Not that I am aware of. They may be able to ship the product though. Generally you need to go to specialty places for epoxies, such as protective coatings or marine places.

is a clear varnish okay to use to waterproof the enclosure? as long as it is left for about a week to dry completely?

Urethanes will not waterproof, they only provide a certain level of resistance. They are fine for environments that are not too demanding in terms of cleaning and moisture, but still do need to be redone from time to time. Epoxies are great, they can be used to seal up wood to be used as fish tanks or ponds, or any other use in which a 100% safe tough-as-nails seal is needed.

For anyone that is interested in using NPC Epoxal 3:1 it is available from Chauncey Building Supply in Etobicoke (416-239-1187). $46.95 for 1/2 gallon.

Hope this is helpful and can save someone the trip to Niagara Falls. Although if you buy direct from NPC it will only cost $33.20 for a half gallon. BTW, shipping would cost more than the product as the epoxy is considered dangerous goods.
