Ive been gone for a while, busy with school starting and what not...anyways id just like to announce that my lil crestie now at twop months as of september12th is now taking small mealies, hes ate 6 so far in 3 days, there small though maybe 3/4s or 4/5's of an inch long...its doing very well i still havent seen too much change in its colour though..:( but i expect it to change a bit within the next month hopefuly...anyways the way i feed mealies is i put them fairly close to the crestie on the branch and obviously the crestie just jerks its head stares right at it and wam! Anyways today one mealie hung off the branch it was holding on but its body dangled in the air...my crestie still got it though.it was great.also it takes the crestie a bit of time to finish the worm...i always watch it when it eats incase it chokes...watching this lil guy eat is great!he grabs it shakes his head around swinging it then runs up with it still in its mouth to the top of the enclosure to eat it...remind me of leopards(the Cat) when they kill there prey then bring it up in a tree to eat it.

Thats awesome...

Sometimes I feed small mealies when I've just run out of pinheads, but not all of my babies seem to take to them. Some of them go nuts, some of them don't even notice.

There's no real nutritional reason to feed them mealies though, so I usually stick to crickets, although I just got the crazy juvi I have to eat butterworms and silkworms recently, 'cause she'll eat anything...

Read this article, its quite interesting. Maybe mealies bad name is just a fable. Its up to you to decide.

What about Crested Gecko Diet? Are you able to find that anywhere? Its' got some of the protein you'd be (or rather your cresties would be) missing out on...even better is Gargoyle Gecko Diet.

I'm getting a Crestie on Saturday (fingers crossed), and had a quick question about diet. I was planning on feeding him (or her) crickets and babyfood (pear, apple, banana etc - with the vitamin powder), alternating every other day. I'm wondering if feeding mealworms rather than crickets, is a good idea, or if it matters at all. Any advice would be great guys!

Mealies aren't the greatest food, they don't offer much in the way of things like calcium. I only use them when I've run out of EVERYTHING, and that only lasts for a day or two at a time. Crickets would be a much better alternative. If you don't want to have the crickets in your house, pick up some Crested Gecko Diet, available at many petstores. It has the protein that babyfood and mealies don't. An even better source of protein is Gargoyle Gecko Diet. Protien is important for growth and overall health. The Rhac book says that some people see better breeding results with more insects/protein in the diet.

Good luck,
Heather

Thanks so much. I think I'll try out some crickets first, and see how that goes. I just have this aweful visual of them getting lost in the house. Haha. If it goes well, I will stick to that along with the baby food. If not, I'll invest in some CGD. Anyways, thanks for the input.

Oh also the way i feed the mealies to my crestie it by putting them right infront og him...so i can watch him eat,he never eats un supervised(unless from his babyfood dish) i also dip the mealies tails in CGD mixed with hienz appricot babyfood so when he eats the mealies he gets some good stuff.

Since I can't find too small of crickets (and the ones I did find my little 2 month old didn't care much for), I gave her a tiny waxworm last night and she ate it!
