HEY ALL I'M NEW HERE AND JUST GOT MYSELF A JALISCO MILKSNAKE AND WAS HOPEING FOR SOME TIPS ON MITE PREVENTION.
Dont buy from pet stores :o
Reason I say is because the first snake I ever got was from a pet store which was a BP and it had mites. Ever since then I have bought from respectible breeders online and at expos and have never seen another mite.
Keep your snake cage clean and keep your snake away from places with mites such as some outdoor places and you will be fine.

Congrats on the jalisco milksnake - hope to see pics!! Our quarantine involves using paper towels for bedding instead of aspen for at least 3 weeks after we bring a snake home - makes it a lot easier to spot mites if they are present. Many people will actually treat the snake with Nix (a human louse shampoo - do a search on this forum for posts with specifics of treatement) when they bring it home to prevent them. Snake mites come from other reptiles and so the greatest risk is bringing them home from the pet store with you. The bedding you buy there may be a potential problem, but they are just as likely to be on the snake. Look for tiny black, moving dots especially on the chin (in the groove). Good luck with the new snake,

I'm jealous, I'd pay for a Jalisco with mites anyday.
Very nice find. You may have the only specimen in the country.
