Well, omega finally outgrew his first hides, so I replaced them with larger terra cotta flower pots, inverted with an entrance knocked out along the rim of each.

He seems to HATE them. He wont stay in them, and has taken to sitting on TOP of the one on the warm side, rather than in it. I think I might have made the entrance hole on one of them too large, by accident, so I am going to try replacing that one and see if he likes it better.

Meanwhile, do I need to be worried about him camping out on the cage floor, or on top of the hides rather than in them?

He will go in them, but comes immediately out again, and he has been around the tank multiple times today, I presume looking for his old ones? :(

Advice welcome!

ART:

Snakes go where they want if you provide multi-locations of comfort and warmth, they choose what ever they feel they need at the time. As long as you have all there requirements met, and a few hides, a good water source and a steady regular feeding schedule that ball with be fine. Mine use the hides and sit on them, curl around the water bowl and do what they want.

About half of my larger balls and all of my hatchlings don't have hides at all, and they eat fine. You might be an over-protective mom in this case, don't worry about it, throw in an extra sheet of newspaper, if he wants to hide bad enough, he'll burrow under it.

hahah cool. Im thinking about gluing a fabric flap over the entrance holes to make them a little more enclosed, as it was really hard to hammer out an entrance that was big enough without making them a bit too big. He definiately isnt cramming himself into these, though, and looks much more comfortable now.

Thanks for writing guys. I guess I am a tad bit neurotic about my animals. But healthy isnt enough for me. They gotta be happy, too!

Is the fabric "snake door" on the hide entrances a bad idea?

I once changed the hide for one of my bp's and he would never use it, but I put his original one in again and he used it......so maybe if you can find a hide that was like your old one he will use it...
