BCI's are actually great starter snakes. They are very hardy and easy to keep. I have 6 of them, and have not been bit yet. So i guess you can say they are calm, heck you can even say they are very calm. They are really fun snakes to keep, I enjoy every minute of it. I reccomend you buy a baby boa, that way you will not be intimidated by its size. Handle it a good amount, and in the future you will have yourself a gentle giant. Take care.

Dan.

They are calm for the most part, but they do have their "off" days. A 7 foot female we have bit me on the elbow Sunday, LOL. She was tired of getting being messed with and she was going into blue, so she let me know in her own way that she was ready for it to stop. That was the first time in over 2.5 years that she has ever bitten me. We have a male that will bite me for no reason I can think of. He doesn't strike, just reaches over, clamps down, and lets go. Weird.

They are all unpredictable. One cannot say that a snake won't ever bite.

They are easy to care for, though....

I think if you have had a bit of experience with a ball python you will be able to handle a BCI...but make sure you want something that size first! :)

bci's are my favorite snakes! my big girl is my favorite pet in the world. babies are sometimes very shy and jumpy (more likley to strike when hungry but not very likely to strike out of anger unless not treated nicley) larger snakes can definelty strike when hungry but i havn't seen it much at all compared to babies. they have very strong feeding responses and you have to be quite careful when they are hungry and their cage is open.

other than feeding time and shedding time when they can also be quite angry they are very calm and if they havn't been treated greatly and they are a little agresive they are usually easy to tame, mine are both easy to handle and my big girl will fall right to sleep in my lap if i sit down with her.

just as JonD said they do get big, females usually grow much larger than males, they have been known to grow 10 feet and up. on average they grow around 8 feet and males usually grow up to about 6 feet. both usually get pretty fat when big so they can be a heavy snake.

they are so fun though! i say go bci all the way!! =)
