hey,

as some of you guys know (well probably just shane) i had a piranha, and i have been trying to get rid of him for a while now...well i woke up this morning and looked in his tank and saw that things were all knowcked over and stirred up, and the piranha was dead up against some rock....not under the rock though...then i noticed that the submersable heater was exploded into 2 with shattered pieces of glass all over the bottom of the tank....so i unplugged it and lightly tapped the water to see if it was still electrical and stuff, and the water was freakin hot...it was at 100* F and yet the pump has been off for a bit seeing as how its busted...so i can imagine how hot it was before, so somehow the heater exploded and shocked/melted my fish.....but i WAS trying to get rid of him...but not like that.....oh well..thats my story folks...

heres some pics

Oh submersible heater ryan......im probably guessing your heater was too close to something, like a rock or gravel etc....causing you to either have a hot spot and break? Or it had condensation in it and it coolected....steamed and broke.....or? Just glad you didnt get electricuted.....and yeah man, touching it really fast is always a good way to check......next time use a great big metal pole to do that.....as touching it real fast with that is going to have the exact same effect!!! ALWAYS THING SAFETY hahahahahahahah (dont worry everyone, i havent lost my marbels, ryan and i are friends).

sorry your fish died. It is a good thing you and anything else didnt get hurt. And it is a good thing that the water was not electrifide, because your butt would have been a lightning rod and carried that sucker straight to ground.

Since Piranahs are large fish and can get a bit active in the tank, they sometimes get a bit too wild around the heater and bash it against the tank causing it (the heater) to break. I've heard of this before with oscars and other big fish...including piranahs. This problem can be prevented by simply putting one of those heaterguards on the heater. Theyre just this plastic case with tones of slots for water circulation and there are clamps at the to so it holds the heater in place away from the plastic. There are also suction cups on the back to stick the heater to the tank. They only seem to fit the submersable heaters though. So if the fish bashes it, the tank or the heater won't smash!

Doesn't have to be that big, I had a 6" oscar terrorized a heater into submission. Killed everything :( . He used to slam into it full force trying to catch goldfish retreating behind it. The odd part is that I actually too precautions against that but I guess he weakened it enough that it gave of its own free will at another date. shortly after. Probably cracks I did not notice.
