Now before I scare you, I know only 1 veiled chameleon per cage. That is the current plan that will be fulfilled this weekend from the Red Deer show. But my question I have not been able to locate an answer to, on Ssnakes or Google. Can you keep another non-chameleon species in the same cage? I am just pondering future developments for my cage and this is one of them. It is 2'l x 2'w x 4'h cage, screened on three sides. I am sure it would be pending on my cham's temperment, but has this been done successfully? What was the other species?

Do you mean a veiled + another species? OR just another species + another species?

I'm no expert but I believe you should keep ALL animals out of the veiled's (and most other chams') sight. That's just what I heard and I follow it strictly.

Yes a male veiled + another non-cham species. Everything I have read says that veiled chams are highly territorial and should not be kept out of sight of other chams(save a few odd females, or in a reptile room) . So I was just wondering about other non-chams being a safe cohabitant with a veiled.

Thanks for your reply.

To add to this topic. What about hermit crabs. They dont move around too much, and I know they are one of the few organisms on this planet that can survive off of fecal matter. Its my thought that the cham might just think of it as a slow moving rock. And I know there are small hermits but im talking about the larger ones.

Rule of thumb - every animal has to have its own cage. Therefore no confusion or problems.

Hermit crabs? a) the shell wouldn't be good for the chameleon if ingested, snail shells maybe, hermit crabs no...b) chameleons go on the ground, and hermit crabs have claws.....

I have seen Giant Day Geckos (Phelsuma m. grandis) that have gotten out of their own cage and got into a male panther's (Ambanja) and they did fine in there together. I have also heard of a Nosy Be and a Quadricornus being kept together, both male, in perfect harmony. I've also seen a 1.2 ratio of veileds kept together successfully. It's all about odds, the law of averages.

Chameleons are one of the most sensitive reptiles. They stress quite easy and I personally wouldn't risk it. I also think all reptiles should have there own cage.

For an animal that stresses out when you breathe on them funny, another chameleon LET ALONE another species just sounds silly. They're not even supposed to *see* other chameleons, I can only imagine about another species ;)

As for hermit crabs, I can only *imagine* the wacky situations that would entail.
