The guy I bought him from didnt mention it. I didnt know anything about pastels and X breeds until this forum so it very well could be. if I take him to a good shop would they know?

i think people on here can tell you .there is a lot of good breeder and boa owner on here my husband just got two bci pastels and they both look like the one you have. (but i could be wrong) lol

the term pastel does not refer to a clearly defined genetic trait or allele, its just a term that breeders use to refer to animals they have selectively bred for a certain look.

no lizlady, i did not say that at all. i said that it was term that breeders use for their lines of "pastel colored" boas, it is not a single-gene controlled trait such as anery or albino. so you cannot look at a snake and say whether or not it is a pastel. its kind of like using the term "high yellow" to describe a leopard gecko. if it has a lot of yellow on it, then its a high yellow. high yellow parents tend to have high yellow offspring. but you cant be het for high yellow. its more subtle, and there are varying degrees.

no. salmon is the name used for mr. ihle's line of hypos. that is a dominant trait, controlled by one gene.

Actually you can say weather an animal is Pastel or not! Jeff Ronne orginatedthe trait and it is basically a type of hypomeanism.

I found Jeff Ronne's explanation of "pastelism" to be rather dissappointing, it just boils down to: Whatever Jeff Ronne says it is. Not very scientific or objective is it? It's not a simple recessive trait nor a co-dom he tells us which makes it very hard to understand what this trait actually IS.

I still don't exactly get it but I'm beginning to think that no one really does, including the man that "discovered" it. To me it sounds like this variety, described as having reduced black pigment throughout (absent or nearly absent in the side markings) and an "odd wash" (whatever that means) has just been cultivated through several generations of breeding for a specific look and colour.

I don't know what distinguishes a Pastel from a Hypo but I'm willing to believe that others (or maybe just Mr. Ronne?) can see some kind of difference. Maybe I just haven't seen enough of each first hand... Only one cure for that, buy a pair of both and breed them till I get it right. lol!

You can tell a hypo for sure because patelism will not affect the eyes wher in hypo's it does. Plus the reducution of black is through out the body in hypos not just the sides.
