View Full Version : Vocal Frogs...
Hello All...
I know most of you keep frogs and toads as pets and I was wondering which species are the most vocal?? I've only owned one frog and one toad during my life, but I really would like to get into them again... I especially would like a species that will sing me to sleep at night and be somewhat active in the evenings. I really like the look of "Dumpies" and monkey frogs...
What do you guys think? Thanks in advance!! =)

my noisiest frogs are my bullfrogs, but my tree frogs and xenopus are pretty noisy too. in fact, i think all my frogs and toads make noise. my favorite amphibian noise is the one my pacman makes when disturbed. it's kind of like the sound of a pig being slaughtered, and you can hear it frog outside of the house. he doesnt do it that often anymore tho, now that he's relatively used to me.

I've only every owned my one Whites tree frog, although I have been wanting too pick up a few more of them. He is quite vocal, loves too sing along too music, or if I bump into something and it makes a noise. He’s also VERY active in the night, some nights a bit too active for my liking, lots of bumping and crashing as he climbs around his enclosure. They are also fairly large tree frogs, and GREAT eaters (watch your thumbs lol jk)

Yes, I have been leaning towards Whites (I call them "Dumpies" don't know if that's common where you are). =)
I really like their look, (I think they're adorable), and definately want an active, happy, vocal, and enthusiastic frog. However, I'm still just doing some research...
Can you tell me a little bit about the weekly care of White's frogs, and a little bit about their set-up requirements? Thanks for your replies!! =)

Pacman's make the best sounds ever! I always compare his song to what it would sound like if you stomped on a giant rat or something.

Hi, well My White's (I chose too call them whites but dumpies is also common) Any way, He has gone through MANY different cages I've tried them all lol. And in the end I found the best was a Rubbermaid with a screen top and I chopped up a wood broom handle and screwed 2 of the pieces so they are offset and ones a bit higher then the other. and threw in a hide (which he stopped using long ago, and a few fake plants for show. He's got a water bowel large enough for him too stretch out in , and right now the substrate is sphagnum moss. Kept damp, but my preferred substrate I believe is still paper towel, just wet it in the morning night, and replaced when needed.
They are VERY tolerant of dryer conditions, so no worries at all if you slip up and leave the towel dry one day. Actually although I’m half ashamed too say it I went away for a few days once and the person who had agreed too look after him didn’t. He went almost a week with a dry water bowel and no moisture and it didn’t even faze him, it was an accident I will not repeat. But I doubt many amphibians out there are that tolerant
They also seem too thrive in cooler temperatures and like Good ventilation. my cage (which I will post pick of tomorrow if I can) has two rows of 1/2" air wholes drilled around the top , as well as a screened lid. I also ended up removing all heat sources from his cage, He sits atop my burms and 2 boas cages , which seems too be just the right amount of heat, room temperature where his cage sits averages around 80 degrees. but sometimes is as low as 70, with no effect on him, Only when the temperature raises too 86+ do I notice a change and he becomes very lethargic. For feeding i was feeding several times a week but he became quite lethargic, I have cut back too one or 2 meals of 2 or 3 cockroaches which seems too be perfect for him.
I Hope that helps. I'll answer any questions you might have if there’s something I missed. Oh, when choosing a substrate, keep in mind these guys when feed will take anything around the food item in with it. also lol, they just leap with there mouths wide open (another reason why paper towel works, they don’t eat it). and also ALWAYS use spring water, NOT tap water. And be careful of exposure too any chemicals at all. same as with any amphibian .
