I've shared a lot of photos of my AFTs and my leopards, but I have yet to post pics of the gecko which was my very first. Here he is...

He is the smaller of the "frog-eyed geckos". This species attains a length of approximately 4". I have yet to see another scincus scincus for sale at any store or reptile expo. I was under the impression that these are not rare geckos, but they do seem few and far between in captive collections, especially in Canada. If others are aware of the availability of this subspecies, please correct me. I have seen T. s. keyserlingii quite often as well as T. roborowskii. I may have to do some serious searching to find a girlfriend for this guy, but it will be worth it. Anyways, just wanted to share and see if anyone else is keeping these or knows any more in-depth information on them. Here's a link that explains basic care if anyone's interested....

Cool, I like froggies:)

I almost bought a pair of the same species that you have.

They were 50.00$ each.

Adam, I think your gecko is adorable! I have been looking for information on keeping them (any 'T' species in general). I friend of mine always has some, but I'm not sure what 'kind'. I don't know if he'll ship them, but I can find out if you're interested.

The care sheet you provided is one that I already have, but thank you for posting it! Can you tell me a little bit about what kind of care and attention your gecko gets? (What's his name, btw??)

Thanks for sharing, and I look forward to reading your replies!

Hi Samba,
It's kinda funny that you ask what his name is because usually I don't name my geckos, but since he was my first, the name that I gave him was simply "Gex".

The care that I provide for him is fairly simple really. There is a 90 F hot end and a cool end of 75 - 80 F during the day. At night, these geckos can tolerate a significant drop in temperature, but I tend to maintain at least 75 F . They really enjoy burrowing, so I utilize some paper towel rolls which I submerse in the 4" of sand that he has in his enclosure. I also partially submerse a clay saucer hidespot which acts as a humid hide. I pour water on the sand every so often, to maintain some solidity for burrowing. He eats 3 or 4 crickets every few days and enjoys the occasional waxworms and mealworms. Though I have not bred him, my friends had tried to pair him with their females, however he displayed aggressive tendencies towards them. This leads me to believe that a winter cooling period is important to successful breeding and to subdue territorial aggression between newly introduced specimens. Another theory is that Gex just has an attitude problem  , but I like to believe the former assumption. Gex also seems to appreciate a habitat with less light than my other nocturnal geckos. Being exposed to too much light during the daytime had caused severe stress and appetite loss at his past location in the store I work at. If I can think of anything else, I will be sure to post the info, but I believe that is my entire experience with scincus scincus so far. I hope this helps a little bit. I would say, if you like frog-eyeds, then definitely acquire some and enjoy! The deep layer of moist sand and the range in temperature are two essentials, but once you have those, then I'm sure you will be successful!
