so what is the best setup for a 10 gallon glass tank? Heat pad at the warm end and a red bulb?
About to go to Walmart for a digital thermometer and later a high pressure sodium bulb at Lowe's... my 'Sexy' is gonna be happy.

I take it you are talking about a ball python? I hope to god it's a few months old at max, because a 10 gallon is cruel for anything over. Pick a heatpad or a bulb, not both, unless you want to kill it. You're going to want a bigger tank. Why do you need a sodium bulb?
My personal opinion: read a caresheet.

i did and it said ''If it is a hatchling (12-18) it will do well in a 10-gallon tank or Rubbermaid enclosure. At this age I dont recommend anything larger, because they have a tendency to feel stressed. A small enclosure makes them feel more secure. Small adults (3) can be housed in a 20-gallon enclosure; large adults (5) in a 30-gallon will suffice." And about the heatpad or bulb, it said this -> "Light bulbs & UTH can work in conjunction. Light bulbs provide an ambient temperature and UTH provides a basking spot. The UTH comes in different sizes and should cover approximately 1/3 of the floor space. A thermostat should regulate it, to prevent over heating & consequently burning the snake. The light bulb should be monitored with a thermometer to find the correct wattage to suit the enclosure. I use a 60watt red bulb for a 30-gallon enclosure with a digital thermometer. It should also be contained in a mesh when placed inside the enclosure to avoid burning the snake. "
Now correct me if I'm wrong - because I don't want to "kill" my snake.
And oh btw - I did read plenty of caresheets.

Frankly, I would just use an UTH and a regular light bulb with an 'on-off' cycle. The bulb produces decent amounts of heat, but wont over heat your animal.
