3 Toed and setup

I changed my boxie's enclosure around a bit and added a larger water basin after having observed him trying to "swim" through his water dish with his head under water. In order to prevent any possible mishaps, I added cork bark, rocks and driftwood to layer the bottom of the tray so that the water level is only about 1.5 inches deep. Here are some pics. Any comments are welcome.

Timmy is adoreable, though looks female. :) I was wondering, he/she is comfortable in that cage? I used to keep box turtles, and they would all get stressed if you tried to put them in see through cages of any kind. I used to use large, grey rubbermaid totes to house them for security and extra space. I believe they were close to 4 feet long and 1.5 to 2 feet wide. Other than that, the water basin looks good. I always used to use the glazed saucers that are meant to go under plants.

sexing box turtles is incredibly easy. if it has red eyes it is male.

That's not actually accurate. I have a few females with red eyes. Although most not a dark as the males. Your best bet is to check the concave in the plastron and the position of the annus in the tail.

Hi Lisa, nope he/she doesn't seem to be stressed so far. Timmy's the one turtle that I have known that hasn't been head shy or reluctant for human interaction. He'll come right up to the front to see what I'm doing at the computer. He/she even lets me scratch his head sometimes. Rubbermaids are excellent ideas for turtles and tortoises. If he/she was ever stressed, that's what I would use. Oh, he also has an outdoor pen which he goes to on warm summer days.

I guess "Timmy" might be a "Tara", but either is good with me.

Nice set up!! I'm currently looking for new ideas on how to house my boxie, who, previously had a pen in the backyard. (On July 3rd he 'escaped' and I hadn't seen him until Aug.14th, this last Saturday). I checked so thoroughly for him that I put posters up all over my neighborhood thinking he was on the loose!!! Anyhow, I think I might use rubbermaids from now on!

Sexing boxies is not that easy!!! Mine (his name is Mike) has been seen by experienced professionals who recommended an X-RAY to determine it's sex!!!

Let me describe Mike for you; 'He' has male coloration... Reds, Oranges and Yellows. Lacks Red eyes (more of a golden copper color), and does not have a concave plastron. If not for the coloration one would determine that "Mike" should be "MikA" (For those of you who saw "Euro Trip"). Any sexing ideas? Tim & Julie - You mentioned examining the tail... what should I look for?? Thanks in advance!!!
