View Full Version : Does anyone know of....
Does anyone know of Reptile Resuce organazations that need to find homes for reptiles? that are really cheap or free? I have alot of extra space and could offer some homes....:)
Hey Rikki,
I looked up a few on google for you i'm not sure where your located but hope some of these might help...
Ontario Reptile Rescue
www.reptilerescue.on.ca/
Northern Virgina Reptile Rescue
http://www.boxturtle.org/pages/adopt.htm#placement
Arrowhead Reptile Rescue
http://www.arrowheadreptilerescue.org/adopt/
-these guys charge a small fee for the animals also they do not ship so if your not in their arrow i guess this one's not much help
This one has listings of different reptile rescue shelters around the world where you can adopt animals.
http://www.icomm.ca/dragon/represcue.htm
Anyways hope that helped you a little
best of luck finding a new herp
Kayla:)
Thanks very much, looks like ill be giving a few herps a good home :)
I run Samba's Reptile Rescue but prospective adopters must fill out an application, go through a home inspection and be in the state of New Mexico to qualify. Probably not much help, huh? =)
lol no, im in Texas..... If you ever are willing to ship them to an amazing home, drop me a PM!
I might make an exception if you are in Texas... I could easily drive there to inspect your home and deliver the animal. I have a variety of creatures all needing homes... some that were neglected, abused, some sick or deformed... Let me know what you are most interested in and maybe we can work something out. What part of Texas do you live? If you are interested in large snakes by chance there is a North Texas Giant Snake Rescue somewhere over there, but they mainly have retics, burms, anacondas, etc. Not sure if they are still in operation, as they had some trouble with Law Enforcement a couple of years ago. (They weren't doing anything wrong, just getting a hard time from them). If I can get their number I'll post it here for you. If not, you can e-mail me at OpticVixen@Hotmail.Com for information on my organization. Hope this helps! =)
P.S. What the heck is this underlining crap?? LOL Can someone please explain to me why various words are underlined with no apparent reason behind it?

Clickable links are always underlined. Just like every other web page in the world.

Jeff,
There's adware and browser hijackers that will highlight, or insert links to common words as well. I think that's what they're referring to.
They're seeing additional links on their page that we're not because of some software installed on top of their browser.

That would suck. All this Net junk traffic is just going to get worse too.
Rikki, just because you have some "extra room" doesn't make you a good "rescue". Experience and knowledge are also needed. Think before you end up giving a reptile a worse life for lack of experience and knowledge. Just because they're "free" or "cheap" doesn't mean they're what you want or need. It seems anyone can be a rescue for reptiles now.

If you take ''rescues'' in, be sure that they are small, cause wounded animals aren't really as predictable as you would want them to be...
mykee I am very expirienced with reptiles, i work at a pet store as well and have a few reptiles my self ;)
"I am very expirienced with reptiles, i work at a pet store..."
Exactly my point. Then I must be a mechanic because I own a car.
I don't know where I find all the time because I'm also a General Contractor 'cause I own my own house.

Thats is as good a point as I think I have seen on this site mykee. Just because you work in a "pet sotre" that treats animals "well" doesn't make you qualified to take in rescues. Remeber, many rescues, also with a lot of time and effort, come with health problems and possible injuries ...

I work at a pet store too, and i have to say there are many animals with which i have no experience at all even thought i might have sold tons and cared for them for a good while. I'm not saying i'm selling things i don't know anything about!!! I'm saying that ''having experience with an animal'' only comes after a long time of interaction and observation with a particular specie... For example, i have sold bloods, black throat monitors, tons of chameleons, land tortoises knowing precicely how to care for them but i have no REAL experience with them. And even if you have tons of knowledge on the reptile doesnt mean you're truly ready to face every problem a rescued animal might have.
The fact of working in a pet store isn't a good argument at all... You can spend your time going from a pet shop to another and not even find a single competent person!!! Also, if you work in a pet store with no herps or even a dozen of them doesnt make of you a ''reptile specialist'' even if it is your official title at the place where you work...
phil.
Listen guys, im expirienced. If i want my herps wouldnt be in the great shape they are in! Ive been into herps for about 4 years now, not very long but im expirienced. I volunteer at the vet, im taking reptilian science for my freshman year, i work at a pet store. Reptiles are my life, im expirienced now can we get back on topic? :p

That wasnt the question.
Rikki - What herps do you currently own or have owned in the past? It is an easy enough question, so please answer it.
Jason
I have answered it....Read the link i provided ;)
QUOTE FROM THE LINK I PROVIDED:
At the pet stort i work with a 11 ft burm, i own a nile, iguana, 2 red ear sliders, and a ball python. I owned a 5ft Iguana raised from a hatchling which i sold when we moved ( )..... Ive been in the reptile hobby for 4 years and all of my animals are in excellent condition.

Ok... nothing very hard to keep there... Ball python : easy snake for beginners, nile, very steady eater, iguana, also very easy to keep, same for red ear sliders...
So that makes me un expirienced? Do you work with a 11ft burm?

08-14-04, 05:44 PM
Good for you.
Jason
I don't think feeding and changing the water of an 11' burm, means you have experience.. IF you had experience, you wouldn't be going into that burms cage alone..
I dont only feed and water him, i handle him daily, take him around the shop, clean his cage and much more. Whats up with everyone picking?

Just to be on the fence here, how much experince would you critics recomend before someone is qualified to open there doors to unwanted Iguanas, Savs, Leopards, Beardies, Anoles, RES, and the occasional corn, oh and let's not forget Burms probably the most abandoned snake of them all?
My concern with someone who wants rescues is first their motivation but second their finances. If you can't afford to take it to the vet and spend what ever it takes to fix it right I say leave it alone.

can we please not jump down his throat? what makes you think he would be adopting an animal he couldnt care for? almost all reptile adoption agencies have very rigorous screening procedures and would not adopt an animal out to someone they felt could not care for it. it is not our place to make this judgement. what makes anyone think he would be getting in over his head? there are plenty of easy to care for animals out there for adoption, and if he doesnt know how to care for a sick reptile, he wont adopt one! can we just give each other the benefit of the doubt?

I think its because you consider yourself to be experienced when you really are not.
Thanks for the kind words thunder. I am expirienced and i know what im doing. I dont know why chose to mess with me, ive been nothing but a good member here.

Again, how do judge experience? I got my first snake, a corn, November 1st 2001. Am I experienced?

Sorry, I don't agree with you walking around the store holding an 11' burm.. I wouldn't walk around my room alone with an 11' burm.. Large snakes require atleast two people for handling.. No matter how much you say you can read his movements and what not, it's just not safe.. But, that's my opinion..

Here is my own personal example. I own a BP, I work with it everyday but I dont think that considers me to be experienced with them. IMO one must have work with numerous BPs or whatever species and raise them, breed them successfully, and know their behaviours to be considered experienced.
I dont walk with him alone, hes way too heavy. I have a partner ;)

Experiance ... I have owned chameleons for the better part of five years, and even though I have owned four species, soon to be five, I do not consider myself an expert by any means. There is always more to observe and study, and I plan on continuing for many years to come.

I think that part of the issue here is the all of none approach to experience in this thread. No doubt Rikki is experienced. But then again, my cousin decapitated (sp) a 'rattlesnake' (Nerodia sipedon) a couple months ago, I suppose that she is experienced to some degree as well, she did have an experience. I think it's important that people realize that, while they mey be experienced, there are like hundereds or thousands of people more experienced than them. Those who choose on-line forums such as this to proclaim their excellence (not saying that's what your doing Rikki, though I have seen others do it) are likely not the experts they believe themselves to be.
A main concern of mine is that you may not fully appreciate the cost of these 'free' animals... an interesting excersize (sp) would be to make an estimate. Do some research and try to calculate the annual cost of food and other expences, as well as the cost to properly set up housing for the animal. Really, saving $25 on an iguana isn't that great a deal, especually if it unhealthy or untame.
PS - I sound a little high and mighty in this post and thought I should clarify my own experience. I have had an iguana (became eggbound and died) as well as several anoles and a skink. Snakes, I had a rescue burm but traded it for some bps (not because I was incapible [sp] of caring for it, I came to the realization that it may not be a good pet once I'm in university and opted for something smaller). I currently maintain 4 bps, so really, I'm not as experienced as Rikki.

Wow, i think you're way too experienced for me, Rikki. You have dealt with pythons more than twice my size and had a huge 5 footer iguana... Most important of all, you work in a pet store! You also have a nile monitor, which is only suitable for an experienced keeper, so you're safe about that! After all, you said in at least three different forums that you were experienced! I'm pretty impressed and so everyone should be! You're sooo experienced! Wow, no kidding, i wouldnt proclaim having experience until i have kept herps for a least 5-6 years more than i have now ( had my first herps in 1993-1994 ), kept and possibly bred some of the most picky and difficult herps around repetedly! I thought we had already had this huge discution about ''experienced and people proclaiming having experience'' a few months ago... The wise one is the one who realizes he knows nothing, the fools know it all already...

same to me :p
I see why so many members are scared away. So if im expirienced im a bad person or something?
Rikki; On a final note; so you say you've been into reptiles for 4 years, and that you are also "very expirienced". You're 14! Do your Mommy and Daddy know that you want the added responsibility of taking in unwanted, unhealthy and possibly dangerous reptiles? Do you have any idea how much money alone will be needed to care for these extra animals? I'm guessing a paper route won't cover it. Did you even ask Mommy and Daddy's permission? Geez, I remember when I was 14, puberty was hard enough, but having to do my bed in the morning, shower daily and take out the garbage would put me over the edge responsibility-wise.
Lastly, to proclaim yourself a"very expirienced" reptile keeper was laughable at best. I've been on this site for just under two years, and have over 60 "snake years" (refer to vpi.com for explanation) of experience working exclusively with one species of snake and I continue to learn every day. I'm not very experienced, I've barely scratched the surface of knowledge with this species. Of the almost 6000 members on this here site, I would estimate there to be maybe 75-80 who are truly "very experienced" and you sir/madam are not one of them.
I understand, "Newbie" mistake, but if you want to be taken seriously around here, engage in topics other than "How old are you", "Are you Canadian/American", "Favorite soft drink", "Favorite who cares"........

sorry rikki, i know it sounds very rude... its just that it always causes the same debate when someone auto-proclaims himself to be experienced... no offense, pal. Rikki, I think that people think your a little too 'cocky', a lot of the people reading this thread will have more experience than you (perhaps by decades, they may evan do this kind of thing proffesionally), and will undoubtidly know people more experienced than them. Here we have a 14 year old 'kid', with what some more experienced herpers would consider little experience, apparently (sp, notice I said apparently, don't hate me :) )trying to pass themselves off as an expert. I'm sure you can see how some people might be offended.
bistrobob85
08-14-04, 08:23 PM
Wow, Rikki aint to cocky. The only sad thing is that he is 14 and ( unless he does have AMAZING food and room ressources ) will probably end giving his animal up. Stats prove that about 10% of them get tamed up, the others are potentially dangerous monitors... In comparison, it is a little like if i gave my youngest sister ( 12 years old ) a baby yellow anaconda for her birthday this month... I don't know if you understand what would be sad about it...

In that case .. carry on (just maybe be a little easier on Rikki? We all were new at one point or another) :)
Jason
You know nothing about the situation yet you act as you do. We have a reptile room in my house, my mom and dad own the pet shop where i work. I make $100 a week enough to feed my animals and take care of them.... My animals are in excellent condition, i never said i was more expirienced than any of you! I know im not! Though i do have alot of expirience with reptiles, thats nothing wrong.....
And i dont see why anyone would call my cocky after the way you are treating me. What did i do to diserve this treatment? I havnt been rude to a single one of you, i love this place sooo much and i dont want certain members to ruin this for me becuase i am expirienced with reptiles.

Cheers,
Trevor
Well ill admit....I've been around reptiles my whole life but still consider myself not even close to bein a pro. It's good that you r interested in adopting tho cuz alot of reps dont get adopted out and even tho they might be old and you might pay more for them its well worth the effort even if they do pass away in a yr as long as they have a great year with you.Theres nothing worse than an animal geting adopted out only to be neglected even more.I know im only 13 but i try to learn new things about all animals to TRY and get exsperience with them and if i could work in a pet shop I would. Cant everyone be alil more easy on him hes trying to do a good deed and help an animal not hurt it......thats why hes on this website is to learn more(thats y i am). I do respect what everyone is saying an I know for sure alot of yall know a heck of alot more than i do.
Thanks for the kind words, finally someone who understands :)

Yikes, a 51 word sentence.
no problem rikki! i know what its like when people think you have no exsperience to tell you the truth (my opion) I think everyone who owns a reptile has a lil exsperience(if they take good care of them that is).

yeah, she's talking to you, pal. as i was saying, we've had this thread about ''experience people'' before and i don't want to start it over. You've got yourself a pretty nile monitor and if your parents own the petshop, they probably know what you've bought and will help you with it. In fact, i am pretty much worrying about the nile monitor's future, but if you truly have the room and cash to feed a huge monitor, thats your responsibility. If i'm being hard on you, it is because statistically speaking, almost NO 14 years old would be able to take care of a mature nile, but if you have nice resources and are able to do the job, well my compliments...
Trevor, i just want to tell you that i dont need more flyes than i already have!!! Still, i think you might understand what i'm worried about. No offense to anyone, everybody keep making up their own strawberry jello ( sooooooo tasty!!! ).

Tim and Julie B

Well Rikki, I would like to begin by saying that I think it is great that you are looking to provide a home to animals that have been mistreated and abandoned. It sounds to me that you are quite responsible for your age, since you have a job that allows you to provide food and housing expenses for your animals. Not to mention that you probably get supplies at cost because your parents own a pet store:D
I am not sure why people had to start harassing you. Just because someone says they have experience is no reason to criticize or degrade them with sarcastic remarks. You never said you were an expert or anything! And to bring up your age was also unecessary, since age has nothing to do with being responsible. If I could appologize on others behalves I would, but...........
Anyways, good luck with the sources provided and be sure to post any rescues you receive and your experiences along the way. Take care, and remember to read up on everything you consider adopting. I am sure that you could also get advice from many of us here just to broaden the spectrum of internet information!:D
Julie
Thank you very much Tim and Julie B. It made me feel tons better ;)
Rikki - I long ago stop reading the crap people are flinging on here... If these people can't say anything constructive they shouldn't be posting at all (not that constructive points haven't been brought up).
I know that you are not the most experienced keeper... Personally I know that even people who have worked with reptiles small and large for years and years and years still make mistakes. If you want to give a special needs animal a home, try volunteering at a vet clinic to get more experience on the medical and rehabilitative side. It's exausting to care for an animal, and if you get one, you may not have much of a life leftover!
It's true, many rescued reptiles are not going to be friendly when they are rescued and handled. Trust me, I know!
It's good that you have the experience you do have... although, I must say I'm not sure why a petstore is letting you run around with an 11' burm. You are still quite young, and that snake has the potential to overpower and kill you if it so wished... and there is little chance that you could be rescued before permenant damage has been caused. This is an extreme risk the petstore is taking with you... (what if the snake overpowers and hurts you? Or, what if it lashed out a customer? I hope you'll never know those reprecussions). Snakes are well known to been unpredictable with persons who have kept them for years without incident!!! Just something to chew on...
Also, I think many people would be concerned with the fact that you 'gave' your iguana away because you moved. (Did you give it away or sell it?) Reptiles, like any other pet should be a lifelong commitment. Like any other member of a family, they go with you when you move. I know it's hard... I have a 14 foot long burm and I've moved with him four times!!!! Some may think that you weren't commited to the iguana... Some might say you gave him away because it was easier than taking him with you... I don't know all the facts, though, but I know this is in the minds of people following this post. They might also be thinking that if you get another iguana, then move, that you'll give this one away too!
I wish you luck, and just as a side note, just because an animal is a rescue will not mean it's free. (Now I know that someone else brought this up, not you); any decent rescue organization will charge you a nominal fee based on 1.) How much the animal is generally worth, 2.) To recover costs such as feeding, vet care, medications, lighting and rooming expenses. AND 3.) Paying a fee demonstrates that the purchaser is not just getting the animal on a whim... Paying money for the animal in itself is sort of making a commitment; like an investiment.
I have so much more advice to give you but I can't right now (I'm at work). Keep learning about your reptiles, and I wish you the best of luck!
P.S. Julie, I just read your post, and whoheartedly agree with you... You summarized it better than I ever could!!! =)
