I've noticed that many members here use temp guns rather than thermometers, my question is where can I purchase one and what price range should I expect?

Yes but for those that cant buy at expos would have to buy online and like Raytek said $50-$100 + shipping ;)

Also shipping for a temp gun is not the same as shipping for a snake at $35-$50 but usually around $8.

I got mine from Ravi, it works great. A great cheaper alternative for the Rayteck ones. But the rayteck one's are better. Basically you get what you pay for.

I just bought one from Tempgun.com (Pro Exotics).

It was $25 bucks US, plus 8 dollars shipping, which they knocked down to 4 because of some technical problems I was having with the site and it's pay section.

Duties and taxes came to 9 bucks.

I used to be able to order stuff from the US and only get the odd item nailed for duties/taxes, but as the postal clerk explained, they're checking *everything* that comes through now, so expect to pay. (grumble grumble).

Question for you temp gun owners. I was just wondering what the IR spread is on them. I picked on up from work the other day but the only thing is at five feet it takes a five foot diameter. Is this the same as the ones you have? We've got another one at work and it's a direct line so you can pin point something from as far away as twenty feet, but the only thing is that one costs about $180.

Just look for the ratio in the specs for any you find on the market.

A 1:1 will do exactly what you described above. 1 inch away covers a one inch area, and 5 feet a five foot area.
But with a 1:1 you want it to be as close as possible or you'll get reading distortions from ambient air temps.

You shouldn't need anything expensive or extremely tight in focus if it's just for checking hot spots in an animals cage. For engine work and electronics, sure :)
