How would I go about having shortheaded gartersnakes shipped to Ontario from the US?
Thank You

The easiest way would probably be to have them shipped to someone you know in the US near the border. Then drive down and pick them up. :)
I've had snakes shipped to the post office in Grand Forks which is only 1.5 hours from my city.

Tim does that mean it would be okay for me to drive down to Fargo,ND and buy reptiles there and then bring them across the border by car?

It depends if they are CITES listed animals or not. What species are you thinking of?
I called the border a head of time and asked what they would want to see when I came back into Canada. I brought several books with pictures of the snakes to ID them and then they looked them up in some HUGE book to see if they were ok. It was that easy... at least that time it was. I was just bring some kingsnakes over though and I haven't tried it again since. :)

It would be a different ball game if you were flying. More difficult, in fact.

There are no permits or anything required to bring non-cites snakes back?? You can just drive back and still be legal?

Well, I just told you how I did it. I'm not saying that is the "rule". Call your closest border crossing and ask them. It might be that easy for you too. Though I could see it being up to whoever is on dudty at the time. :)

I'm posting a new board to clarify this and see if it's true..... I need to know because we are coming back from florida next week and were told we could bring anything non-cites over without paperwork..... we just have to declare it....
I hope this is true, but if it's not, we'll be in trouble!

Justin, I think it IS true, I just don't want to say it with too much confidence because I could be wrong in certain instances. :)

Please be advised that amphibians and reptiles (excluding turtles and tortoises) are no longer regulated under the Health of Animals Regulations and as a result, no Canadian Food Inspection Agency import permit is required, nor a health certificate and no inspection will normally be done at the border. Imports are permitted from any country, for any use, to any destination in Canada.
well, isn't that kewl. i'm printing that off and bringing it with me!

Where is the easiest place to find a list of all the different CITES animals?

http://www.cites.org/eng/resources/species.html has a searchable database.

Justin, If you happen to find a big albino Texas Ratsnake could you bring it back for me? I'm looking for one around the $75 CDN range. Male or female...or a pair for about $150 CDN...If they have babies then $50 CDN. I live about 2h from the Peoples Republic of Scarborough (LOL) so it shouldn't take me to long to pick them up. Let me know if your up for it. I've been looking around Canada but can't seem to find one.

As far as I've been told by USFWS, more than 6 animals is considered a commercial shipment, so you'll need an export permit. I'd definitely check it out first if you plan to take orders for the show.

I wonder if it's 6 per person or per car..... ;)
either way, thank you for the info!
I've printed off alot of stuff that might be needed when coming back, and a full detailed list of the cites animals that won't be following us home!

We go through this over and over. No herps can legally leave or enter the USA without being inspected by US fish & wildlife. To do so is breaking US federal law. These inspections must be set up a couple days in advance as USF&W isn't permanently posted at any border crossings and no border crossings are considered "designated ports" and that is where inspections usually take place(major airports). Getting inspections at "non designated ports"
is doable but you need an "exception from designated port permit" It's 25 bucks, and the US import/export license is 50US per annum..
The import/export license and exception from designated port permit is required for all commercial transactions and are usually ordered several weeks before they are required. You will first get an application, then will have to mail it back with a US$ cheque, and wait several weeks for processing.
If you have a few "pets" they might wave the license and exception permit, but you still are supposed to arrange an inspection.. and that usually costs 55US, even if you don't have the license and except from des permit.
Lots of people bring NON CITES stuff across and simply declare it to Canada customs and pay the GST & PST, as there is no natural mechanism to interact with US officials when crossing back to Canada..
Just be aware that while this is fine with Canada customs, you've broken US law to get that far.
Now Canada customs wont tell you this because it's not their jurisdiciton or job to inform Canadians of US law. Problems are only likely to arrise if for some reason they contact the US side about your animals, or you are sent back with them.
If US customs then finds out, you crossed the border with animals that weren't inspected, you might be in a bit of trouble and subject to a fine or denied US access in the future.

Thanks, Roy, for saving me the trouble:-)
For anyone interested, I will soon be importing some additional specimens for our programs. I can bring in stuff (excl. turtles and CITES species) for others if requested, on a cost sharing basis.
