Hey everyone.

I just switched my 14 inch approx (nose to end of tail) Veiled chameleon into a new enclosure. The original was wood and screening, 2.5'x1.5'x4', into a new reptarium, 34''x34''x4'. He originally had a bowl to eat from, as he was fairly small and crickets could escape from the setup if not properly secured.

In his new tank, he has no bowl. He now must hunt. I am worried that he isn't doing this properly, not catching enough crickets. Should I add in a bowl for the crickets again? Or let him hunt? Thanks for the advice.

Also, he is approximately 7.5 months of age.

Personally, I think the decision is up to you. When I kept a Veild in a reptarium I placed crix in a bowl but I let silkies climb where ever they wanted to. He did great, he even ate those crix that escaped the bowl with no problem.

Yah, just the problem is he never has had to hunt before, they were always there for him. I also bought him a few silks, he never even touched them (never has had them before). Oh well, I gave them to a tarantula, now he has a huge butt.

Maybe your cham hasnt settled in yet. If it were up to me I would try the bowl method again, if he eats, its a good sign that he has settled in, then take away the bowl and toss some crix or other feeders in there and wait for the results.

I would use a bowl. I know my veiled got a lazy tongue from cup feeding, and couldn't use to tongue properly to hunt.

yup Jason has a point they can start to develop lazy tongue, its when they wont be able to use there tongue like they use too, so they cant shoot very far. Waht you can do is free roam 3/4 of what you feed in the cup and leave the red in the cup. This way it can starve. Hmmm i would try to get him to eat the silkworms, if he has never had it that would explain why. My chameleon wouldnt take any worm at the beginning, cause he has never had them.......So i tried everything possible until i stumbled to butter worms, he ate it and loved it so he thought the rest of the worms were like butter worms and now hes eating them like crazy, so just try everything. Also try vege's, very good for them
