I was wondering what you all thought of these racks. And...would you go with belly heat or overhead radiant heat?
here's the link:

Thanks.

I would say you could build it for about 1/2 the price of what they want for it and that includes the rubbermaids

I got the 7 shelf with back heat on the top 4 shelves (I keep Mandarins in the bottom three and they like it cool). The rack is extremely sturdy and assembled very easily. I like the fact that it won't warp or rot like wood might. Also, I can totally disinfect it since it's not very porous. The heat rope works great (added a Helix thermostat). I like the back heat because it provides more of a temp gradient for the tubs than if half the shelves were heated. All of my other cages have belly heat since they have more floor space. Mark over at animal plastics makes a quality product.
The only downsides to the rack are the gap between the tubs and the shelves which could allow small snakes to escape and the trouble I had finding the rubbermaid tubs locally. I wouldn't keep hatchling colubrids (or other small snakes in it, but for yearling rat snakes, house snakes, kings, and hognose it works great.

S11 could be made for ~$140 Canadian ($100 U.S.?), with belly heat (which I would recommend 100%++). DEFINITELY not worth $300 U.S. IMO.

It could be made for less that $100 CDN, not including the Rubbermaid bins. For sure.

Wood is cheap, paint is cheap, heat tape is cheap, and that's all you really need. I don't see where the cost comes in. Sure, it all adds up, but 2 sheets of 1/2" or 5/8" cull ($25 per sheet) plus a 4L can of marine enamel ($23), heat tape (12 squares for $45) is under $100. But you could add an expensive thermostat and some flashy ID cards and it would still be less money than the one from that wesbite. Keep in mind that all my calculations were in CANADIAN funds! That translates into about $75-80 US!! :D

well i dont own any but think it is a great product, a bit overpriced, but still good..
IMO lugging around, trying to move around in the house, if you have to move to a new house, moving those melamine racks and cages around is a pain in the you know what.. Heavy, awkward, the works..
You have to sometimes re-seal around the inside edges of these melamine, or any wood cage. and sometimes they just plain fall apart.
Plastic caging is the way to go, and i can see myself in the near future switching to them.

I agree Tim. If money wasn't an option, those racks are sooooo spiffy and clean, they'd be very very tempting! Probably very light too!

I just found this site on kingsnake.c om the other day and it is a canadian manufacturer of plastic cages, no racks yet though i dont think...
I think it is a pretty decent price for these, as most 4 foot plastic cages run for $200.00 each U.S then the shipping on top of that..
plus they just emailed me back saying that, they have the sliding glass, and the 1 piece flip down front now, like the boaphiles im guessing..
I may just have to try 1 out to see how they are.

im sure if you emailed them, and asked they may just be able to build them..
They told me in an email, that they build to order, so who knows they just might be able to make them.

Hi! iam the owner of reptic-plastics, ive just read you're tread and found that it would be a good opportunity to introduce myself! So hi to everybody!
For those who where talking about larger cages, yes whe can make 6' and 8' cages and yes whe can make 17,5" high cages, pictures and prices will be available soon(for now e-mail me for more details). Rack system is also on the way, iam still hesitating beetween 1/4 and 1/2 pvc plastic. . I am so busy now that i dont have time to take good care of my website, making cages and replying to e-mails actually takes 99% of my time(the 1% remaining, i sleep, lol). If you have any questions concerning my products, you can e-mail me at:
reptic-plastics@videotron.ca
i will also be at the ontario reptile expo the 12 of september with a bunch of cages, so for those who would like to save shipping cost and have special discount price, it would be a good opportunity!
   For reptic-plastics.
I already met Jean Benoit and his cages (15 min away from my house ). I went to his shop and ordered cages. The quality of those cages was well over my expectations. I'm gonna replace all my boa cages. They are really great in every way and very light. I'll post some pics of some 4'X2'x1' boa cages from him soon. He's got other sizes and he is in process of developing more by listening to breeder's needs. There is other friends from Toronto that already ordered some it would be great to hear about their thoughts to if they are on ssnakess.
........ Its about time someone comes up with a 100% Canadian product like that.
Congrats!
Stav
I finally took some pics of the new reptic- plastics cages. I'm gonna replace all my cages for those;) Jean Benoit....
