I am in Hong Kong till August 7th (Been here since July 20th) and was wondering if anyone knew of place in Hong Kong to see reptiles. I stumbled upong the Hong Kong Reptile society website and have posted there as well, but thought I would post here too. I have been to Fish Street and seen a couple of shops, but everything I saw was common in Canada like Chameleons, Beardies and Leos.

Any help would be appreciated as tomorrow is my last day to see anything before I leave.

Thanks

Greg West

Hey Greg,

Have you tried to contact Angus? Go to his site and get his contact info and he might be able to give you some leads.

Later,

Ron

Mmm... there are geckos around the city at night, but they're not common.

Only other thing I can think of off the top of my head is "Birdie Street" (rough translation), where they sell all the songbirds. They sell herps as feeders for the birds, and some other kinds as well.

Also, have you had snake stew yet? If not, you should definitely check that out. I don't remember what type of snake they use since it's been such a long time, but it should be interesting all the same.

Have you tried contacting Toni from a herp?
He could really tell you where things are more than Angus. Angus doesn't get out as often as Toni (Hong Kong wise...)

The main street that has the herps for sale in HK are on 'fish street' where you've already been. I remember that there are around 4 or 5 shops with herps there.

"Birdie Street" is also a nice place to visit if you want to go and take a look at things, its located in Prince Edward Station

Other than that....there isn't much reptile stores around anymore...(heck there aren't much animal shops around either...)

If you want to try the snake soup, go to Wan Chai Market and there should be a couple there. Most of the snakes they use there are blue beauties, taiwan beauties and other beauties (they're large enough with meat and everything.....

Have fun in HK!!
I love it there...heck I was from there!! LOL!!

Toni's email is toni@aherp.com

I'd contact Angus and see his stuff while there too if you can. Can't wait to hear what taiwan beauty soup tastes like!

They just recently caught a crocodile in Hong Kong and I think they set up a natural environment for him to live in it. I am not sure where they are keeping him but I know that place was opened for a brief while. They then close it up because the crocodile was under too much stress but that was awhile ago.
Try asking around. It was a big news in Hong Kong so it shouldn't be too hard to get information.

I have contacted Toni and have not got a reply yet. I should have done this a week ago. I didn't get to see anything today as I didn't have time. Maybe next time. I will post pictures once I get back.

Actually he did reply but basically told me that there isn't much to see unless you are a frequent customer and some places show you what they keep in their back room. Oh well, next spot for me is the Red Deer show. See everyone there.

Greg.

I have had snake soup before and I liked it. Not sure what type of snake it was though. I had croc steaks while I was here and those were damn good. Cheap too

Have you tried turtle jello? Most of the stuff you see is fake anyway.

Cheers,
JJ;)

No no turtle jello. I think I would draw the line at that. I know the croc steaks were real as it was at a croc farm.
